This is probably the place that ActiveX is referring? However, I disagree with the comparison since that site is a Yahoo store selling an Maxtor OEM bare drive vs BB selling a retial boxed WD product with a known warranty. Both Maxor and WD produce their share of defective products. Your success or failure with one brand vs the other is simply luck.

Has anyone had any problems getting AMEX to PM on items bought from Best Buy? I vaguely remember in AMEX's policy that it would not PM items purchased from stores that had existing PM policies. Since Best Buy does pricematch ( however not with Internet sites ) would AMEX refuse to PM?

No problems. I've never had AMEX turn down any PM, and I have PMed at BB retail before. Concievably you could buy something at BB, having them PM to Staples or CompUSA or whatever, then still PM to AMEX if you find a lower price on or offline within 60 days.



About, the four times per year PM limit, I don't have a link for you, but I could be wrong. Could someone confirm whether there is a limit on total number of Blue PMs in a year? How many PMs did you do last year?

just so you know that maxtor drive is only a 5400 rpm with <12ms access times. Not in quite the same field as this WD 7200 RPM 8.9ms drive.

The problem is that you and most others here confuse OEM with the new hybrid products that vendors like Newegg sometines offer. By their very deffinition, OEM products do not carry any type of manufacturer warranty. If you check any manufacturer support site you will see this spelled out in bold print. This includes both Maxtor and Western Digital.

Direct from Maxtor's warranty support site...

The limited, non-transferable warranty on products sold through an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is extended only to the OEM that purchases the products directly from Maxtor or Quantum. Therefore, owners of OEM manufactured equipment containing a Maxtor or Quantum product must contact the OEM or the place of purchase for warranty service.

Direct from Western Digital's warranty support site...

The serial number that you provided indicates that your Western Digital drive was purchased from an Original Equipment Manufacturer. You will need to contact the OEM where you purchased this drive to obtain RMA repair services

The entire concept of an OEM product is to reduce cost be removing future product liability from the manufacturer. This appeals to vendors, especially system builders, becase they get a substantial price reduction and most already have processes in place to test the manufacturer's OEMed product in a system before it is sold. The vendor that sells OEM products assume the liability that would usually exist with a retail boxed equivanlent. In recent years, manufacturers have introduced another channel to distribute their products and this is where the confusion exists. Large companies such as Dell, NECx, Newegg have contracted with manufacturers to buy bulked packaged products. The are NOT OEM and they are NOT retail boxed products. Wow...thanks for the links for the 120 gig maxtor. I have a pretty large MP3 collection (Just over 10,000 of em!) and I need more space fast. I buy two at a time so I can do raid 1. (Would hate to lose all my music after spending all that time encoding and cataloging them.)

There is OEM and then there is OEM. There are TWO types of OEM and it's a shame that they are called the same thing when in fact there is a huge difference when it comes to warranty. First type of OEM is an example of Dell, Gateway, Compaq etc. When you buy an OEM hard drive from them inside of a computer (or a Dell-branded hard drive made by Western Digital from their website), this is truly OEM product with a limited (mostly ONE-YEAR) warranty that must be handled by Dell, Gateway, Compaq etc. HOWEVER, the second type of OEM hard drives that you can get everywhere else (Newegg, Mwave etc.) has a full THREE-YEAR warranty that is handled by the manufacturer and in this case there is truly only a difference of a fancy box and a cable between this type of OEM and retail. So please don't spread FUD and make sure you know the difference.

Actually there is only ONEtype of OEM and places like Newegg and others have taken the liberty of attaching the misleading warranty information to products that are OEM and do NOT include the stated manufacturer warranty, but are instead are warranteed by Newegg them selves. Newegg was just fined $185,000.00 in January by the CA OAG for selling mis-advertised products on their website in a non-contest plea. Most of the compaints to the OAG concerned warranty mis-representation. Bottom line iif you are purchasing non-retail boxed products especially from Newegg, you had better check the serial number with the manufacturer to reveal the true warranty status before you are find out you are SOL.

No, it's not in store. You call AMEX up after making the purchase, then you fax or mail them copies of your receipt and the dated ad or website advertising a lower price. Then if they approve it, they send you a check.

Since AMEX changed their policy about multiple matches, it's probably best to buy the drive now, then wait 6 or 7 weeks before price matching to maximize your PM. The only problem is, you have to wait for the PM cash back. If you think about it though, that's not as long as most rebates take to get back to you.

These days, I buy almost everything with Blue, just in case I want to PM it later. Blue also extends the warranties on almost everything. There is a limit of 4 PM's A YEAR, so I try to only PM on things that come close to the PM limit ($250 each). This is a borderline Blue PM, even though its $100. I think most deals posted with a $20 or $30 Blue PM don't make much sense. Unless you don't plan to buy anything expensive, you're losing out on $200+ in PM, if you PM for piddly amounts.

Getreal, I had an OEM Western Digital hard drive. It broke after 2 years. I got it exchanged under warranty with Western Digital, and still have one year left on the warranty, on an OEM drive.

Storm897, since when are there 4 PMs a year? I thought it was 250 per item, 1000 per year. That means that if each item was at its max there would be 4 a year but i assume you could do 100 10 dollar pricematches as well from that policy.

i've been contemplating, as I really am quite broke..however i'll probably take the plunge tomorrow and sell my maxtor 60gig 7200rpm on ebay, *hopefully* it'll be a free/cheap upgrade after all's said and done

Good news for those of you who got on this deal. This drive is currently selling at best buy(atleast in the south Austin store) for 199.99. That means another 100$ in cash back. But better hurry as prices might change again tommorow.
