Good deal but I don't trust MSI's video card quality anymore after having bought one of their 6600GT cards that had a "copper" heatsink. And by copper I mean copper *painted* aluminum heat sink. I eventually had to replace it with a Zalman VF700-Cu cooler.

You eventually had to replace the heatsink because it wasn't copper?

No catch, but you can buy a 256mb X1800XT for the same price that will spank it. The 512mb X1800XT is not much more........

No...you just get a "t" (which is a very popular letter from Wheel of Fortune) rather than an "L" (which never did win anyone the "big" bucks at Wheel of Fortune) I say go for the X1800XT with 512 MBs of RAM. It won't be long before that extra RAM will pay off. IMO.

X1800XL is clocked 500 core, 1000 memory

X1800XT is clocked 625core, 1500 memory

everything else is about the same, same 256bit memory, same amount of pipes.

x1800xt is about 25 to 50% faster card, depending on the resolution you are running and benchmark or game ofcourse.

$220.00 for this card is a good deal, but the extra $50.00 for the XT version is well worth the $50.00.

I wouldn't base performance results on synthetic benchmarks. Seems like game performance often tells a different story.

this is nice, very nice.

edit: get an after market cooler, do an ultra OC on the card and you will get XT speeds with a 512mb of DDR3 for less than the XT256meg card. hot stuff, terribly hot.

benchmarks show the XL machtes the XT very closely anyway, so why grab the XT when you could get even more for less?

The natural question then is, can you OC XTs any further from where they are at? And how much gain can you expect from doing that?

This card is very similar to a X1800XT. I've been checking this card out on some other sites and in some cases it even has the same ram as the X1800XT. If anyone is bold enough, you can try to flash the bios on it to an XT if you've got the 1.2ns ram.

You eventually had to replace the heatsink because it wasn't copper?

Actially the copper paint makes the thermal conductivity terrible. The paint makes the surface on the bottom of the heatsink anything but even and flat. The factory installation of this heatsink took temps in gaming easily up to 90C. If you read the reviews on this particular card on NewEgg you will find that several people had fans burn out and die within a short period of time (this one included and the reason why I changed the heatsink). MSI changed this design after some websites like HardOCP complained about it. But still, the reason I purchased this particular 6600GT over the others is was because it was advertised (by picture) as having a copper heatsink. It was rather deceptive if you ask me. EVGA, on the other hand, you can't go wrong with them.

Still skeptical on this-

Yea you can flash the BIOS to make it an 1800xt but voids the warranty. Hate to have something go bad in the first month lol. You are also assuming that it has the same Samsung memory- manufacturers swap out memory a lot to save $$$ also supply

20$ more you can just get the 1800xt 256 or if you need the extra memory the 512 is 70 more$
