If you can't make dupes yourself (the backwards thing) why bother chipping your XBOX? What sort of "backups" does it play? Does the XBOX play backups in dvd-r or dvd-rw format?

I don't know where he got this backwards thing from, but you can most certainly create backups.

If I could use my XBox as a TiVO and add a large hard drive that would be great. Of course it would have to have video input somewhere.

Am I just dreaming?

Hrm.. tempting.. i've seen videos where people have copied XBOX games w/ a DVDR and played it on the XBOX.. and flicked off microsoft.. but that's besides the point (the flicking off part).. I'm tempted to buy an xbox and a modchip woudl be awesome.. i don't want to lose 50 dollar games hrm.. soo 200 dollar XBOX, 300 dollar DVDR.. + modchip + extra controllers + a buncha other crap = in debt.. guess i'll wait a little hehe

PS. This will be my 100th post

There's a bunch of "backups" floating around Usenet right now. There seems to be a big burst since about mid-May when the Enigmah and Extender chips were first hitting the scene. I'm still wondering how long it takes to burn a full dvd-r at 2X speed ?

Wow by the time you do all that's needed, it would have been easier to just build a gaming rig for your TV, buy a damn gamepad, stock it with a GF3, and pretend it's an xbox =)

I believe it takes 30-45 minutes or so to burn a full dvd without testing. You'll probably want to test the first couple of times, so give yourself 70 minutes or so for a full dvdr, 4.9 gigs.

As for the modchips, they are going to open up huge doors. Imports, unsigned code, and yes, pirated games. The enigmah team is actually coding a divx player as we speak, supporting their own chip with their own software. There are currently 3 major modchips in development or already been released. Xtender, Enigmah, and MessiahX are their names. Xtender has already been shipping, while Enigmah is planned to launch in 2 days, with major retailers shipping on the 29th. MessiahX is still in its development stages, but the messiah team is reducing it to 20 wires within the next couple of weeks.

Installation is pretty easy compared to PS2 mod outfitting. You basically need Torx 10/20 bits, along with some wire, and a soldering iron. I hear heat is an issue, with some people burning a whole in their pcb, so perhaps a lower heat soldering iron is in order. The big thing is here is that these modchips are all soldered on presoldered pads, meaning you solder to the traces, as opposed to on chip soldering like in the PS2.

I'm looking forward to using my Xbox as a jukebox if I ever decide to swap out my hard drive and put in a bigger one. All in all, it's a great year to be an Xbox owner. I have 6 games so far, all legal, and I've only had my xbox for a week.

Wow only 29 wires

Folks you can get these things pre-modded occasionally. Unless you are handy with a soldering tool I'd recommend you let someone who is do this.

Yeah, it makes total sense to buy this. I'll buy 10 while I'm at it!

Face it guys...Microsoft and Nintendo have great prevention methods for their new hardware Anyone even hear about a group hacking the Gamecube? And no, don't give me the "Nobody would want to mod the Gamecube" arguement, because there are tons of people who are willing to mod their GC's.

I agree. They are great. Sony and Sega also had great prevention methods (especially the Dreamcast). But they were still circumvented, in one way or another.

The Titanic was a great ship, it just sank to the bottom of the ocean. Still a great ship though...

BTW, it's not that people don't want to mod the Nintendo, it's just as the previous post stated: presenting a solution for that media size. As opposed to all the other mods, you'd have to tear apart the entire top of the unit just to get a standard CD in it (let alone being able to read it at that point.) I think you'll find that the Panasonic version of the Gamecube, which play standard sized media, will be cracked in the very near future (HINT: there are entire groups of people already trying to mod the Gamecube). It's never a matter of if, but when...especially in Hong Kong.

dont forget to heatsink ur components as u solder.

Uh NO! You need to use a lower heat 25 watt or less soldering iron instead or your going to start having runs lifting off the board. If you don't have good soldering experience I wouldn't even attempt it but hey, it's your X-BOX.
