They were laying the Fiber Optic cable to my house this morning, the diggers woke me up. No idea how long it will be until it's available as a real option to me, I would assume a couple of months to get it all spliced, etc. Considering it's the same price (more or less) as my Comcast cable modem service, it won't be an attractive option to me until Verizon offers TV service over the fiber, and there doesn't seem to be any real word on that. Still, it's cool that I now have a real alternative since my neighborhood couldn't get DSL since it's behind a DLC.

We just got broadband last month and now running on a 512k/256k ($30 per month) connection in "Rip Off" Britain, so that connection would be something else by comparison!!!

Mind you if you want a fast connection they have 20 or 22Mb in France already!!!

However, I can assure you that after years of 56k which only connected at 33.6k - 512k is like greased bloody lightning

If you like the internet, gas (petrol), new cars, consumer electronics, low taxes, cheap phone calls etc....never considering moving to the UK

Verizon installed Fiber in my neighborhood in Coppell, TX 6 weeks ago and its still not available to me. Anyone else have to wait that long?

I've been recieveing flyers and pre-signup notices, but still no go as of yet, so I upped my comcast cable to 6Mb/768Kb for an extra $10 today. I'm just tired of waiting, knowing that the fiber is in my yard just sitting idle.

wtf you talking about? 3mbps/512kbps for $24.95/mo. is a heck of a good deal. And an even better deal (in terms of bang for the buck) is their 1.5mbps/384kbps for $15/mo.

Well, 6 weeks ain't 'nuffin! I waited since August 2004, as it was supposed to be completed then. They had all the fiber laid out there and then, just had squabbles with the city council that delayed stuff :|

I don't know about you, but before SBC bought out Pac Bell, the San Jose Berryessa area was all torn up to install fiber. It's just SBC didn't want to continue with the project when they bought Pac Bell, I basically have a useless fiber connection coming to my house.

I keep thinking about it, but I've been spoiled by the 'static' IP Comcast gives me. It's not guaranteed static, but it's never changed.

If FIOS is anything like Verizon DSL, it could change every day.

Can anyone who has FIOS tell me how often their IP changes? Are they blocking any ports?

I have Verizon DSL here on the north shore of Mass. and FIOS isn't available yet. This year I dropped my phone service with Verizon though, and am going with "dry loop" DSL. It's about $5 more per month than "regular" DSL (that is DSL over a phone line you subscribe to from Verizon), but last year when I had Verizon phone service I was paying like $28 for their crappiest local plan. With the $23 I'm saving in phone line costs ($28-$5 increase in DSL price) I've signed up for ViaTalk VoIP for $21/month, so now for less than the cost of a local Verizon phone line and DSL I'm getting DSL plus unlimited nationwide calls! I know Verizon isn't offering "naked" or "dry loop" DSL everywhere, and some of the CSRs I spoke with when trying to sign up for it didn't know as much as they should, but if you can get it I definitely recommend it.

But still...pretty damn good!

Too lazy to read the rest of the thread (8 million pages by now, but silver spring is a pretty huge area... I have to be really specific when I tell people where I live because silver spring covers everything in montgomery county that isn't already a city.

Nothing at all in WA state... bummer. My 4 down/1.5 up for $50 a month is decent but I would love more. Too bad it will be forever until it hits Seattle and the surrounding areas.
