A friend recommended that I try out Ellis Hosting. It is owned by a friend of my friend's, and it sounded like it was very trustworthy. Plus, since my friend has that connection to the owner, I know who to talk to if any problems come up. So far it has been great. It costs a little more than the generic bargin host out there, but I've been very happy with the service. Plus, they accept my paypal.

people keep saying u get what you pay for, but i currently have a 3.95 dixiesys plan, and am satisfied with it. this however appears to get me more bang for my buck. i might need to switch! Grim, can you give me any details on their service? i saw some videos of their control panel, and it looks pretty good!

basically, i think its your standard hosting details. The control panel is the exact same as onsmart.com. It is very detailed and works nicely. The ftp program works very nice as well, except I hate when they make like 7 default directories for scripts, but I guess thats life. The email they send you with your account info is the most detailed out of any. They explain all url's and where to go to find stuff. They outright show their dns's and email pop3's. They even have webmail for other users, not just the admin. I love it..... my domain name is something funny so my friends want emails. They can either pop3 it or webmail it.

The only thing I've "heard" is bad is their support. That doesnt matter if you don't need it or know somewhere else to go for support on webdesign. Onsmart.com has live 1 on 1 chat with a tech that is insanely helpful.

$4 or $5 a month, can't go wrong

best part is, as long as I keep the hosting the price stays, for 1 or 100 years.

Just a short note, we have over 50 servers, if the server you're on seems slow then moving to another server is only a support ticket away, and even our most problematical server has an uptime over 99% as recorded by websitepulse.com so it's not just a number I pull outta my hat.

everyone has different needs, and there are more shady/terrible support budget hosters out there, so you just gotta be careful. Glad to hear dixiesys is workin for ya though. They are at least honest that 8-95 is their budget venture, and what is and isn't in their TOS.

I?m still very happy with Dixiesys. I recently moved my reseller account to a new server with Direct Admin control panel. Not because there was a problem with the old server (I was on a Plesk server (#9)), but because of the features available on the new ones. The only downtime I remember was back when they physically moved the servers to their new location.

I'm sorry, but I just HAVE to say... I've been meaning to get OFF dixiesys for a LONG time now! Down AT LEAST once a night. In fact, it'd down right NOW as I type this, can't check my email or anything.

I've got a reseller account there at DIXIESYS, and it's ridiculous that it's ALWAYS down, ALWAYS slow... never any improvements. I finally got one guy to agree to switch my server and put me on a less crowded, non-Plesk (PLESK SUCKS THE BIG ONE), server... but guess what... THAT NEVER HAPPENED.

I got dixiesys back a LONG while ago... when it was recommended in the forums here... but I'm afraid it's turned from a good deal to a SOUR deal. Soon as I get the time, probably in the summer, I'm definately going to switch.

99% uptime is a crap statement. And even if it's right... one minute out of every hundred (or more than half a minute per hour) downtime is still horrible. Imagine is AMAZON, GOOGLE, or YAHOO had a 1% downtime... you would bet they're IT guys would be on monster.com looking for a new job.

Amazon/Google/etc pay millions of dollars per month for their network infrastructure, they have SLA's in place with their providers with real teeth and a gaggle of lawyers who will jump all over their providers if that SLA isn't met.

Here are the uptime statisics as measured by websitepulse.com (not us so we can't fudge the numbers):
http://www.dixiesys.com/index.php?display=regular
The worst uptime on a plesk server, 4 months aggregate, not just one single month, is 99.3% on www6.

And yes Plesk sucks hard and we hate it, and we've been TRYING to get people to move off those old Plesk servers for ages, we've even contemplated forcing a move but have held off. Don't suffer in silence we have new Directadmin servers with newer versions of everything ready and waiting for people to move to.. You must be on server 7, it is the only server (of any type) to report any downtime last night, it's apache went down for maintenance after 4 sometime and it had to be restarted by script and was down for around 7 minutes.

So 99% is not "crap", I'm not in the practice of exaggerating or making things up.

Feel free to check out the uptime stats for the other server types if you're just bored http://www.dixiesys.com/index.php?display=uptime

I have been on Dixiesys for over a year and been more then happy. I recently put in a ticket to move to a new DA server so I had access to the latest software (I had no problem swith plesk since my needs are small) and got a response to my help ticket in hours. The move went smooth, and I am still very happy. There might be better dels out there, but I'll stay where I have had great service at a good price.

wow what a great deal! the page is down!!

anyway, i am pretty happy with dixiesys. I got in on a few "2 for 1" deals and am currently paying $10/month for 800MB space and 15GB bandwidth. I recently moved to a DA server from an Ensim server, and the only problem I had was backing up my phpBB2 database.

It seems like they are slow to respond to helpdesk tickets sometimes though, and sometimes all they do is link you to a forum post (usually that i've already seen, i don't do helpdesk tickets unless i search the support forums first).

Another example is that I was having trouble sending email all of a sudden, their response was to move to a new server. I moved to a new server, still had the problems. Turns out my ISP was blocking port 25, they said "call your ISP and see if they can fix it"

they couldn't, so i asked if port 2525 would work and never got a response. I found a very old forum post with that info in it, so when I got home and tried it, it worked. I went ahead and closed the ticket myself after that.

You can't condemn a hosting provider by it's deals.
- 1and1 seems to work fine for me, a little slow on the control panel, but 500MB free for 3 years, I won't complain (too bad that promo ended)
- ripplehost.com also works for me, pretty reliable in most cases
- http://europe.webmatrixhosting.net/ - free trial ASP.net hosting accounts
- http://www.discountasp.com/ - ASP.net hostin at $10/month

There ARE bad ones and fly-by-night hosts, but the ones above have been fine for me

I hate to bring up something off-topic, but has anyone else that signed up for that 1and1.com deal, have problems with their acct. being "locked" after the first month? I helped a friend sign up for that deal, to host some self-recorded console game vids, mostly. Anyways, apparently he went over the xfer limit bandwidth at the end of the first month. Also, the phone # used to sign up for the deal, was no longer in service, at that point in time. Is it possible, that they tried to call him, to get him to pay more $$$ to re-enable the acct., found out the phone # wasn't in service, and then disabled/canceled the acct. on him?

I don't have the admin details to access his acct., all I know was that the last time I checked with him, it showed "locked". He's not the most computer-literate type in the world, so I was helping him out with stuff.

I figured that it would automatically be unlocked at the start of the next month, if it were locked for xfer limit exceeded during the prior month, but that never happened. So I have no idea what's really going on. Has anyone else exceeded their 1and1.com bandwidth allocation, and what is the protocol when that happens?

Wow you're getting ripped off. My other websites are 7.50/month for a gig and 50 transfer with 500 emails. That's the absolute most I will pay.

I pay $22 a month for a 1g/10g reseller acct, and $10 a month for a 5g/70g reseller acct and think both are a good deal. It depends on what your looking for.

1and1.com stinks. Their sites bog down sometimes and their control panel is horrible. I only use them cuz I got 3 years free.

www.totalchoicehosting.com seems like one of the best I've seen so far. www.findmyhosting.com has TONS of positive reviews on this company. $4/month for like 300mb of space (or maybe 200? not sure).

I'm running 2 client websites off them and they are great so far.

I pay 13.50 a month for a 2GB/30GB reseller acct from Dathorn. I've only noticed downtime once in the year I've been with them.

At that price you will be jumping from host to host pretty quickly. I am 99.9% sure that what you are paying is less than cost for the host. So that host must be heavily overselling. What he is paying for is space on good quality bandwidth that is not oversold and a support team to help him.

That $10 is an exception (He gets the space at cost on a special deal )
