Just ordered one, cheaper then everywhere else, plus free shipping. Great mp3/cd player and has a FM tuner and a remote w/ a screen.

Dead? No way, CD players are a cheap alternative and hold a lot of mp3s on cheap media. Sure it's not as great as an ipod but it still is great. I think CDs are the best for the car since you can just use the nice LCD remote (I had the previous version of the slim-x) and hide the cd player somewhere.

I agree buying a SlimX for the car is overkill. I myself have a 40 dollar panasonic with remote that works great in the car, although it is a pain keeping it all in the glovebox with just the remote snaking out.

How do you guys connect these to your car stereo? Tape adapter, FM tuner, or some other way?

My stereo has an analog input... I wish I had a remote on my CD MP3... but generally I just start it up and leave it on until I'm done driving. Battery life on CDMP3s is so good that an iPod would be out of juice tentimes over by the time even my crappy Panasonic is done.

I've got the previous model to this one, and it's great! Having the controls on the remote is great for use while driving.

(To answer the connection question, I use a cassette adapter - works very well!)

Did you see the battery life spec on this thing?!?!?!
"Battery Life Details: Up to 55 hours"
that sure beats my ipod =P On the other hand, my ipod can store way more than 55 hours of music, whereas I think the slimx can't even carry 55 hours of music(unless you encode it into some ridiculously low WMA bitrate). Because if you assume 10x compression on average(which is a good assumption if you have a mix of 128kbps and 192kbps mp3s) then that means just 10 CDs will fit on that one CD-R, which means about 10*74 minutes which is around 12 hours or so of music...
If only they had a player with 55 hour battery life, was sleek and sexy, and could hold 40GB of mp3s. *dreams*

Do you NEED 55 hours of music? That's the question.

I still haven't found a need for that much music in one sitting.
Even when I had finals one mp3 cd was more than enough.

*shrug* that's just me.

Yes, I know an argument is you don't have to keep reloading it over and over and the cost of cd's etc.

I own this mp3 player. The reason I got it was because it is the best cd mp3 player on the market. Sure I wanted an IPOD but it costs so much more. If you do want a cd mp3 player I couldn't recommend this enough. The sound is awesome and so is the battery life. Radio reception is perfect as long as you keep the wire between the remote and the cd player stretched. One thing. The little battery monitor that is displayed on the remote doesn't work that well. It will flash empty on me or jump around from empty to full etc even though I usually have full playback for a long time. Also, the 55 hours thing is slightly deceptive. You have to have an external battery pack attached to it, one that only takes two AA batteries. I don't bother using it since I only have to charge every couple of days anyway.

I got one of those cheap $30-50 audiophase ones for a plane trip, after I sold my slimx and ipod. The price difference is definately obvious. The LCD controller on the slimx can do so much and is very easy to read. Also the SlimX is the nicest looking mp3 player next to the ipod IMO. Also it's really is slim compared to the cheap ones
