I fail to see how dumping $5k+ into an "econobox" is a smart thing... but whatever floats your boat.

Rice at it's best

Now that car is HOT

All I have to say is..I love my 99 Si Dropped sitting on 18s..I own a car lot and have several muscle cars.Ill take my ricer over those any day as a daily driver, not to mention my civic handles better in turns by far than an old camaro, mustang or mopar and while your sucking down gas getting 5-10 mpg im chuggin away getting 20-30 mpg plus.

Nothin like good old american steel but it looks better in the garage, than driving 100 miles a day as you watch your gas gauge move lower..

Uhhh... Humm... I started a very sticky funny @$$ thread. So to mister Camaro... NO. Only Honda B16A's & B18's. Sorry.

To all the muscle car peoples uhh... yeah, your as f$&#ing dumb as the rock you crawled out from under. Hummm... Some how I don't see how this hot deal started the war between your car and mine, but some how IF these performance valve springs, which can net you some more horsepower to run bigger cams, made a car sound like a weed wacker than I can see flaming this thread. Yet these are performance Titinaum valve spring to run bigger cams for more power. Now for all you haters that think a Honda can't be fast I think you should look around. We have a FOUR (4) cylinders running high 9's all motor and many more right behind it running very low 10's ALL MOTOR. Now can me crazy but even though a mustang can do it also it takes you 4 more f$&#ing cylinders and 8 more gallons of gas to do it. Also there are stock frame 4 cylinder Honda's running 8's. I'm sure you can do that to, but again it takes us 4 less cylinders.

So Yes it's a HOT DEAL!!!

Let's just put it this way...

$20k Japanese car + 10k PERFORMANCE mods...no stickers or crap like that

Will dust any car under $50k with the possible exception of the 'Vette Z06.

Brilliant, then when you trade it in or total it in a wreck you'll get $500 for it, because Blue Book says your 93' Honda Civic was worth that.

Of course on the flip side you could easily dump $10k into an $20k American car (Mustang, etc) and do the same. And before anyone accusses me of being some redneck import hater, my two cars are a 99' Camry and 03' 4Runner.

That's a good deal but it's for the ZEX stuff... bleh. Rather get something better made if it's as important as the valvetrain on a high revving engine.

I might be showing my age but back when I was a kid and really into cars (late 70's), most of us bought mid 60's to early 70's muscle cars. It was easy to find affordable beater 67-'72 camaros, firebirds, mustangs, challengers, chargers, etc. with the less desirable drivetrains (6 cyls, small block v-8's with 2bbl carbs, etc.). If they had the performance engines, average kids couldn't afford them. So, we bought the automatic cudas with the 318's and scoured the junkyards for the 340's or 383/440's. If we were lucky, we'd find a salvaged 4 speed with all the parts and linkage. Over time, we'd try to build up a nice little ride. Some of us would achieve it. Some ran out of money or know how or desire and ended up with a nice looking dart or nova, but with a 6 cyl and an auto.

Although it sounds like ancient history, I see pretty much the same thing now. Young people buy the cars that they can afford and then try to get more performance out of them. There's a huge supply of affordable aftermarket performance stuff for japanese cars (as well as plenty of salvaged parts) so it just make sense that that's the type of car you'd want to consider if you're looking for a project. Just like the old days, some kids do it right and build up a respectable little pocket rockets, and the others build rice. To me, rice is all show and no go. The equivalent to my buddy's old souped up '66 chevelle with the inline 6 and the 3 speed on the column. That car looked nice and fast, but that's about all it did.

I don't prefer either, but don't be proud that a Honda or whatever can do it with half the cylinders.....you're also talking about a car that is much lighter. Throw another 1000 lbs of dead weight in it, you'll find out very quickly that your hyped up 4 cylinder is very much equal to anything else. So what if it took 4 more cylinders and 8 more gallons of gas.....it got done didn't it?? BTW, the gas mileage issue is old......my LS1 powered vehicle gets 29mpg on the highway, not too bad for a car with almost 400hp. I also drive a Hyundai

Let's just put it this way...

Take a $15,000 V8 and put $5,000 in mods in to it and see who beats who.
Getting my point here??? Until you got 4 cylinder cars running 4 second quarter miles I will remain unimpressed with the 4 cylinder engine. Again I have no preference, I am a fan of power. I am just realistic and know that every car can be outdone, so in the end there is no winner.

BTW, I was reading a mag not too long ago, and a guy claimed he had the fastest 4 banger in the world at around 9 seconds...... he was not all motor. You got any literature, pics, specs, links, etc... on this 9 second all motor car? I'd like to know more about it.

i love most any car that is/can be made fast. i drive a 93 hatchback with a gsr motor and my total investment is around 5.5k so far. ive got my custom snail kit im about to put on there which will have me waxing mildly modified C5s. with a total of about 8k in a civic(including the car itself) and running low 12s/high 11s i feel is pretty respectable. i suprise my share of cars i race(5.0s, boxters, LT1s,etc) and most people pay respect where its due. when i get romped on by some of my buddies in their SSs and such i dont bitch and moan about me having half the cylinders and a little less than 1/3 of the displacement he has, you run what you brung. theres a good chance im getting a c5/WS6/Z28 when i finish my EE degree in may so im not just another importonly dumbass. but just because its got a 4 banger doesnt mean it needs to get written off.

oh, and the new sti(300hp,300ft/lb). factory 4 banger.

If you stick a blower on your Honda but leave the exterior stock, it's not really rice. Once you put stickers and crap on it, it's Uncle Ben's, i.e. instant rice.

Wow, a guy that knows the meaning of 'rice'. Im glad someone pointed it out to the nimwits flaming on this thread.

Yeah, but Honda runs in Formula One. At least they used to. Or was it Indycar? Can't keep those stupid feuding racing organizations straight.

Uhh... I'm not sure the year on the magazine you where reading maybe 2001?
Here are some websites with newly posted records for 4 bangers (mostly Honda, HA!)

Nopi NDRA Records
Erick Agluair runs a B18C1 GSR 4 Cylinder All-motor 9.99; His website

IDRC Drag circuit
Bisi EZERIOHA runs a Non-vtec F22 4 Cylinder All-motor 10.23; His website

Or maybe you prefer what you might call a real race circuit (whatever...)
NHRA Sport Compact Series
Leslie Durst run a frankenstein B series LS/VTEC 10.13

Then there is many more people in those record books who are running 4 cylinder B series engines in the mid 8's (Bruce Mortensen, Lance Ho-Long, Jo Jo callos). And then there is Stephen Papadakis, 4 Cylinder (though he was in the pro class {tube frame} it is still a fast record) who ran 8.12 at 180 mph.

I hope this helps all of you.

They used to be in Indycar, which is now called CART. But now they're in IRL which is now Indycar... and they're also in Formula One. Not doing to great at the moment... since Ferrari and BMW pretty much have the best engine so far. I believe Honda and Renault own the record for the most consecutive constructors championships though.
