How is this different than Orb and why would I buy this over using Orb for free?

Never heard of this, just wondering what it is compared to using my computer with Orb.

Sling box can controll your home TIVO and then send that to your Smart Phone using Sling Mobile. Sling Mobile can then controll your home TIVO as needed.

I'd be ALL over this if only my internet connection was DSL or Cable. Stupid living in the country. Stupid comcast wants $30,000 to run a line to my house. Stupid stupid stupid.

Ah. I don't have a TIVO, so I guess it's not that hot for me.

You don't have to have TIVO...Slingbox is still AWESOME! I'm using it MUCH more than I thought I would.

I would COMPLETELY agree! I paid $150 + tax for mine, but I think I would easily have paid double that if I knew how great this was.

I've been on the fence for this. I have Dish Network, no Tivo. I have been strongly considering building a computer for DVR purposes. I don't watch a lot of TV but there have been many times I wished I had a TV in my computer room upstairs. I have a nice 21" IBM CRT that I could display it on, but besides basic transmitting, I'm wondering what everyone else is doing with this?

I've seen people trasmitting to their mobile phones. I have a Nokia 9300, has a nice 640x200 widescreen with full internet access but Cingular sucks and is definitely not fast enough for streaming video.

My dad's TREO 700 can get decent video via Sprint.

I would say the main benefits to slingbox are:

- watching TV while comuting if you have a mobile phone service and phone that can do it
- watching TV on your laptop when traveling. IE Tokyo TV not exactly DirecTV
- watching TV at work if your computer has enough IT ability.
- watching PayTV live when traveling (ie HBO or some other Pay service) that is not offered via your hotel.

I use it in the following ways:
1) Watch TV/Traffic/News/Sportscenter on my way to/from work in my car. (more, just listen). It would probably be even better if you ride the bus.*
2) Watch TV at work.
3) Watch TV while eating at Fast Food restaurants*
4) Watch TV while playing golf in between shots. I play golf mostly on Sundays, and now I won't miss any of my favorite football games!*
5) Watch TV at hotels when I'm travelling. (I know...most hotels have TVs anyways, but they rarely have all the channels I have at home)
6) If you don't have cable, you can set up the box at your family or friends house and get their cable streamed to your computer/htpc!

*-requires a windows mobile phone with EVDO.

Yeah...I recently changed from Cingular to Sprint because they were too damn slow in implementing their wireless broadband.

Oh yea that sounds safe? Sounds like some nightmare I might drive by in LA during the commute.

well, he is in Washington, So I will be looking around carefully while driving next time I am in Washington.

On the other hand, if govtcheez75 can pls notify me before he plans to drive in CA, that will be great.

Wireless connections are different. You need the quivilant of EVDO speeds. Most carrierers have it. On sprint I think it is called Power Vission now.

It sounds like the majority of people use it to stream to their phones?? I would not be doing that so I guess Orb works best for me.
