Pro for Salary: Guaranteed 40 hours pay no matter how many actual hours worked
Con for salary: Maximum 40 hours pay (no overtime)

Pro for hourly: Paid overtime after 40
Con for hourly: Must work 40 hours to get overtime

I've only worked hourly

Salary jobs you almost ALWAYS work over 40 hours. Atleast in my experience.

I'm hourly, and love it... $8 an hour, but I get awesome medical/dental/optical insurance. I just started this job. I transfered from a factory job where I made 10.85 an hour, but I had to commute 45miles to work then 45miles back home where as my new job is walking distance.

I'm salaried but I get paid overtime... not sure how much though, as I haven't done it (I just started), but most of my coworkers have. Usually they don't charge overtime unless they have to stay really late or work on a weekend.

Hourly is probably better for jobs under 50-60K per year

I'm currently Hourly (with bonus based on performance) and actually getting paid for the time I work is nice. My paid time off is also directly proportional to the hours worked rather than the standard 1 or 2 week paid thing that goes with salary.

I was on salary for the previous 4 years and employers can (and do) easily abuse low and mid level salary employees. 9~10 hour work days with occasional evenings and weekends uncompensated was standard.

Damn the man! Hourly. I'm working contract and haven't looked back. Incorporate and get health insurance through the business.

pro for salary: your boss expects you to do something, and as long is it gets done, nobody cares what you do with your time (not all workplaces apply)

It depends.

At one person I know company, if they worked for 10 hours a week, they still have to be paid for all 40, and if they came in atleast 1 hour each day, they don't lose vacation. At another person I know they have to work atleast 40. But at the person who can work under 40, they don't get overtime if they work over 40. The person who must work atleast 40 hours, does get overtime at over 40 hours. The person who can work any number of hours, each year the company shuts down for 2 weeks during december, hourly people do NOT get paid. She still must be paid.
