This got interesting... Names in the article but won't plaster them here.

Property records show the home on Hickory Dr., at the centre of the blast, is owned by _____, 55, and his wife ______.

_____’s age on property records match that of a _____ from Mississauga, who was convicted of second-degree murder in 1982 for killing a friend over a drug debt, according to articles from the Star’s archives.

Ouch, what was the explosion?

Note though that some brick homes are essentially wood builds with a brick face. ie. The brick is cosmetic, not structural. In my home mentioned above, the brick is structural, but ironically, it's all hidden under a face of wood siding. It looks like a Cape Cod wood design.

natural gas + attempted murder/suicide

everyone survived and the crazy husband was badly burned. The wife and child escaped, and made it out in time to run from the house, yet were close enough to be knocked down by the blast while running from it.

One's dead, actually. Female and unidentified. Home owners are missing.

Complete heresay but someone on Reddit said people smelled gas walking by the house that exploded for days.

I think he was talking about ANOTHER explosion, which affected his own home (TechBoyJK's).

EDIT: Beaten to it by Eug.

Your house walls are more than 12" thick and are solid brick? I find that very hard to believe, unless you live in a castle.

My last house was built in the 1930s and the exterior walls were 3 courses of brick with the interior covered by plaster and lathe. Yeah, the more interior 2 courses of bricks were't as cosmetically pretty as the exterior facing ones, but a lot of the houses built after the Great Chicago fire are sturdy as shit. Hell, we did a bathroom remodel and the cast iron tub must have weighed 600 pounds. Picking up a demolished section of it that was about 30 cm^2 was a pain in the ass, I can't imagine being the workmen who needed to hand carry dozens of those things into houses as they were being built back in the day.

they still make houses out of brick >.<

isnt it all drywall and plywood :X

Not even plywood. Mostly OSB these days.

They still make lots of brick homes but mostly the brick is cosmetic. Structural is wood.

I'm talking about an explosion nearly 10 years ago that, from 4 blocks away, blew out our windows and put roofing insulation in our yard.

Yep, forgot about the story on the previous page.

It's actually creepy how similar the two stories are. I think there's even another similar story that happened in the same area as the OP.

They were showing this on the news, definitely pretty crazy stuff.

Actually I'm surprised methane detectors arn't considered mandatory like CO and Fire ones are. I keep meaning to put one in but never do. Probably going to wait till I design my new home automation system, it will be in a different location and wired better.

Of course at this point we don't know the cause, but natural gas seems like the biggest possibility when it comes to an explosion like this. I don't even think a meth lab would do this much damage. Only thing that's odd is nothing really appears burnt and they'd be able to smell natural gas after as the source would still be leaking and they never mentioned any smells.

When you think about it though it's kinda crazy to think we have these gas lines going into all our homes. But heating with electricity would be absurdly expensive. In the future when a better alternative is found we'll probably look back at how crazy we were.

^^^ My neighbour refused to put in natural gas appliances in his house for something like 40 years. I wonder how much extra he spent in electricity costs.

Hi finally agreed to gas a few years ago when he went with a tankless water heater.

Then again he may have a point. When I was getting some renos done, my contractor said she smelled a bit of gas rarely, even though they weren't working on the gas lines. I called in the gas company. The first guy found nothing, so they called a more senior guy and he found a slight leak at my gas meter, which he thinks may have been there for years. Luckily it was very slight, and outside, but shit that still scared me.

Then when I installed a tankless water heater the gas company upgraded the meter for increased flow... and when they replaced the meter told me that they discovered the underground pipe was not in great shape and had to be replaced (at their expense).

A friend bought a 2000 or so sqft house with an electric furnace and water heater, hydro bills were in the $1200 range every month in the winter. He had a gas line installed eventually.
