Odd thing is it doesn't look like there was any fire. It is a very tightly packed neighborhood too. Probably 6 or 7 nearby homes have damage and/or debris on their roof tops.

Gonna guess a gas leak. This actually happened to a house we used to live in. The owner was working on the house himself and it ended up exploding due to a gas leak. Luckily he wasn't home when it blew up.

damn that had to have been one violent explosion.

I wonder how much of it was from a violent explosion, and how much of it was due to building as cheaply as possible - barely meeting code. Look at those roof trusses - they're still intact! How the hell do you blow a roof apart and have roof trusses with no sign of damage? What'd they do? Put it together with finishing nails??

(Reminds me of the thread where someone in Maryland was complaining that his neighbor's "chimney" fell against his house. 2x4's for framing the chimney were held to the house with a single nail.

Maybe they were doing renovations or just redoing the roof?

This is why I rent.

Seriously tho, this happens all of the time and 9 out of 10 times its a fairly new house. You would think with the technical progression we would build houses better these days. My aunt has a house built in the 40s and its is still standing even tho the house next to hers spontaneously combusted.

you're probably right, for a country that gets pretty much every kind of natural disasters on a regular basis you do build some flimsy houses.

I guess it's all to keep the square footage price down so everybody can get a cheap mcMansion.

The trusses are incredibly strong. Not too surprising that a few are still intact. Residential building codes are constantly being improved. Unfortunately, if an inspector is lazy it doesn't matter how good or bad the code is. There isn't a lot that can be done to improve the structures themselves other than enforcing the code or significantly increasing the cost.

Damm, that's just plain trash now. I remember a story from Miami where a woman wanted to fog her house for roaches, she kinda went overboard using 26 cans simultaneously, the range pilot light ignited the massive amount of fog and the explosion blew out all the windows and lifted the roof off 1 foot high...

Woah that's insane. That roof was well built though, but it looks like they forgot to actually attach it to the house when it was built. Might be salvagable, save a couple grand or so in the rebuilding process.

Man that's got to suck though. Loose everything, just like that. Hopefully nobody got hurt though.

lmao. Suppose to shut off all pilots and sources of ignition when using that much fog type chemical. Even painting a basement floor with certain types of paint or something, you should turn off the pilots.

Have you SEEN the way they slap houses together these days?? D:

For sure, buy an older home. The rental house I was in, 6 years ago, that had a gas explosion was still standing, and essentially intact afterwards.....well, except for the back wall being blown off in 3 pieces!

why don't these videos play for me? Is it adblock? I don't think I have it on my IE. It loads the story then tries to load my localhost 127.0.0.1 which I know I have a bunch of sites pointed to, but why does this affect the video not playing at all?

don't older homes use less efficient/safe materials anyway? There's good and bad for old & new.

You mean like structural brick, 2x10 floor joists with I-beams (or trusses), etc? They may have less insulation since they were built when heating was cheap, but less safe? Not until you get into the lead paint and asbestos, but that has nothing to do with the envelope.
