a co-worker actually purchased a house in arizona.
she decided on that when she realized she could get a larger/better house for half the price.
even if she flew back regularly--she'd still save money.

she drives/flys back weekly.

a little extreme for me--but i would if i could.

I've already lost out on two places because of bidding wars.

And gee it isn't even sunny here year around.
Just hop across the water to Victoria & you will get an average of 30% wage cut & only about 15% cheaper housing. However, the weather is much nicer....1/2 the rain & 4 time the sunshine.

My wife is from Victoria and I admit that the place is GREAT!!!!!!! Nothing like strolling along Inner Harbor at sunset, while gazing at the Empress building. We're driving up there in Dec. from CA.

We're looking at paying $250k+ for a 2 bedroom condo here on the East Coast. Cali may be worse, but we got some rough spots here in the east too.

Housing Prices here in Boston suck like they do in CA. Plus the weather here isn't anywhere close to being as nice. Try Oregon!

Oregon isnt bad if you like rain.
Actually, Southern Oregon and Eastern Oregon get a lot more sunshine than the Willamette Valley area (Portland, Salem, Eugene).
I'm in Medford where we get less than half the amount of rain as Portland.
Even in the winter, we get lots of sunshine.

And yeah, housing prices in Cali suck.
I paid 145K for my 1500 sq. ft brand new 3 bdrm in S. Oregon.

Same house in the bay area would be at least THREE TIMES the price.
I'd like to move to Cali, but nobody will pay me three times my current salary.

here in the bay area, house prices REALLY suck.

can you imagine paying $550k for a house ~2000 sq. ft.?

but to answer your question, it has gone down quite considerably recently.

That sound cool, but it won't be much of a meet because there are only 2 ATers here.

I'm in MA. kid I knew, lived in like a 3200 sq ft. house. family sold the house, moved to cali (his dad got a job there), and the best they could do with the money from selling their house was like a 1500(?) sq ft townhouse.

on a related note, California has also turned him into a tool. :disgust:

Wow. Never knew BC was expensive. It's a beautiful area to lie in btw.

Do you think th eburgeoning movie industry has caused the market to scale up?

I doubt that.
Prices may stagnate a little, or hopefully a lot, but housing prices rarely go down.

That's a pretty mean trick when you consider MA is the Fool Capitol of America (Red Sox Fans)

So how exactly does a person buy a house in california? How can a person qualify for a ~300K mortgage, when they make around $50K?

While the home prices in these areas are not as bad as California, they still are not bargain prices.

I left San Diego for this very reason.

I now live in Faribault, MN

I bought a 1700sqft home on an acre lot for 115 two years ago. My house is worth about 140 now.

I drive to the twin cities to work (about 45 miles each way) and make 42K a yer.

Leaving California allowed my wife to stay home with the kids.
My last apartment in California was in el cajon was 1K a month for a larger (900 sqft) 2BR Townhome. My house payment on my house is 736.

The only place they might have "peaked" would be california, just because the cost of living is so high and people are finally figuring it out. Shanti has it right I doubt prices will fall, if anything they just won't increase as fast.

That's what I'm wondering. I'm looking down the barrel of a $200k mortgage and I make $40k. About 50-60% of my income would go to the roof.

I don't know the answer either. I'm very close to the point where I need to start looking seriously. Even with an ok down payment and pretty good interest rate, I'm just now sure how we can swing the mortgage payment on even a $300k house. So, we are looking at $250k condos. If we go much lower, we would be looking in some bad neighborhoods. Even then, with common charges, insurance and PMI it's going to be a bitch. This is for ~1100 square feet.

In my area I bought a 3br/2ba condo (1100square feet) only 7 years old and in a good neighberhood for $65k. (2 years ago0

3/2 house 1200sf built in 1985 for $80k (2 years ago)and a 4/2 1700sf built in 1979 in a good neighberhood for $110,000(6 months ago).

That comes out to about $65 a square foot, unfortunately everything I have looked at in the past 2 months is over $80a square foot.

I'd love to find a place under $100/ft^2. All the places around my area (even in the boonies) are closer to $150-200/ft^2
