But Tom Cotton thinks the type of people who work in DC somehow make it unworthy of Statehood 🙄🙄

Of course McConnell will play his infamous grim reaper role and not do anything with the bill.

But hey, taxation without representation. It's not like that was the rallying cry that started the country or anything 🙄

Cotton really takes the long way around to say that he doesn't think black people count the same as white people for the purposes of representation.
I mean not a shock but just say it.

Both DC and PR should be offered statehood via legislation very early in the next congress and the filibuster destroyed to accomplish it.

Cotton's comments were a masterclass in dog whistling to the base. Pretty disgusting.

While I totally understand they don’t want 2-4 more likely D Senators coming from DC & PR, I fail to see why crafting policy that would attract one, two or four more R Senators is so painful. Certainly it can be done.
This is simply a situation where someone is afraid of changes at work.

Sen. Tom Cotton argued on Thursday that Wyoming, which he called a "well-rounded working-class state," is more deserving of statehood than the District of Columbia, even though the nation's capital has more citizens.

Psssttttt, maybe somebody should tell him that Wyoming is already a state.

The whole reason for creating the District of Colunbia was to eliminate the seat of Government being beholden to or favoring any one state in the union.
Puerto Rico should be given its independence and cut loose as a territory, eliminate the US citizenship for any/all PR natives...let those who live here apply for citizenship that would be automatically granted barring any felony convictions...deport those with convictions or refuse to apply.

Oh...btw, SHOULD both be granted statehood, odds are, each would get two Democratic senators...and no Republicans.

In your first scenario what benefit does PR get out of it?
What benefit to the union does it provide?

It's already gone through a retrocession and home rule. Let's just finish the job and cut the federal district down to the core. Other states have lots of federal employees and buildings too. There are more federal employees in California than there are in DC.

Puerto Rico should be given its independence and cut loose as a territory, eliminate the US citizenship for any/all PR natives...let those who live here apply for citizenship that would be automatically granted barring any felony convictions...deport those with convictions or refuse to apply.

Er that would require at least a constitutional amendment, one major pice of additional legislation, a treaty, and the agreement of the Puerto Rican people. None of which seems likely.

Just do this.

The District of Columbia isn’t big enough to reasonably function as a state, we should just add it to Virginia or Maryland.

Puerto Rico should be given the choice between becoming a sovereign nation or a state.

The solution is pretty simple. Let the people of DC be able to register and vote in federal elections in a state of their choice. Seems the least hassle of all the options.

This doesn't make any sense. It's populous and brings in quite a bit of GDP. Not sure how you're defining big enough...

At 70 square miles, less than 10% of Rhode Island, that's probably true. Perhaps split it at the Potomac though.
