Depends on what you like. Lilberal, ultra Liberal or over the top Liberal.

You could, of course, join the "streaking across campus butt naked society".

Try to get into a suite..those things rock. You get your own bathroom, living room area, and sizable bedrooms. My friend lives in Clark Kerr, and it's a pretty nice place.

Unless of course you want shared coed bathrooms..then you can go for something else.

if you're willing to spend the money and walk/bus or have a car, go for clark kerr. it's nicer but farther away, that's where all the athletic people stay, so it's the best. bowles is a male only dorm that's quite old. foothill is pretty nice as well, plus it's close if you're in engineering or chemistry. the units are pretty much your average dorm, i'd stay away from freeborn dorm (gay, lesbian, nondrinkers ie freaks, I wouldn't stay there) and i guess the whole Unit I dorm, since Unit 2 and 3 have better food (it's the same food, just cooked better). you'll find that the Units have a lower quality than the others, hence the price, but you can eat anywhere you choose. Also, i wouldn't get a triple, if possible. As far as co-ed, it doesn't really matter, since the floors are staggered in the Units, unless of course you don't leave your floor...

As far as choosing Berkeley, I'm not sure if you're from California or not, but expect to live outside the dorms after your first year in a crappy place paying a ton of money unless you join the fraternities. You can also try the International House as a junior/senior.

For a meal plan, I'd just stick to the regular plans not the $ crap to spend at the overpriced places on campus. If you're picky, get the fewest meals, usually meals on the weekends are leftovers, so I'd get a 13/15 or whatever depending on whether you're going to be eating breakfast

will not have a car. Can't afford it. So I would like to stay close to campus. what is a co-ed bathroom? The bathroom used by both male and female? I never heard of this.

are you male/female?

what your major (i.e. where are you going to spend most of your time on campus?)

units are cool, co-ed baths, high-density housing but you meet a lot of people

foothill is nice, but you tend to stick to your own suite.

clark kerr has a lot of space, but it's pretty far from campus.

bowles/stern are single sex, own pref there, i've never even been inside either.

<--- RENT CONTROL BABY! (too bad i'm leaving soon and the rent control leaves with me)

I lived in Unit 2 last year as a freshman and it was nice just because I met so many people. If you want to study a lot and dont really care about the social scene foothill is really quite and great to study in. Otherwise I would suggest to live in one of the units (prob unit 3 just because its the newest) to meet people.

Unit 3 is the newest and nicest. Good food too. Also closest to the center of campus. Be sure to put that you're "social" in their questionnaire, or else you end up in a boring floor. I ended up in a "social" floor (did a lot of sleeping around )

Most "special" students like athletes, *super duper* brainiacs (and the remaing lucky) get the Clark Kerr campus. *Very* nice!

male, molecular and cell biology major (and music as double), no car, poor, don't mind meeting people, not sure about co-ed baths..
I am in a rock band playing keyboard and guitar so I like to meet other musicians..It sounds unit 3 is nice..

One more thing... UCB has high population of Asian-American, like 43%.. Is it pretty competitive??

i think mcb is easy, but competitive because most of those people are trying to go to med school (is that you? or are you actually interesting in mcb, in that case i'd go for bioengineering); but don't worry you can change to chemical engineering when you get there . being asian has nothing to do with it, going to a good school no matter where you are will be competitive. the campus will be filled with a lot of asian american students.

what's wrong with a coed bath, don't want to see boobies while you take a shower? lol, just think of it as a unisex gym locker room, and bring flip flops. i'm sure you'll meet plenty of musicians.

i'm not referring to nondrinkers as freaks, just that whole Freeborn dorm. if you go there and meet the people, you'll understand. unless you're one of them

Bowles is ok. If you can get a single in bowles then you are all good. And Bowles is super close to evans so that's great for discussions. But the rooms are kinda far apart and there's less interaction among the residents. And no girls. But it's really quiet there so that's good if you like studying.

Unit one is pretty good too cuz of its location to campus, but no singles. A lot more social interactions in the units, but might be pretty tough to actually study.

If I were a freshman I would pick unit one. And I would pick putnam so I could be away from the noisy street.
