American Express sent me an annual statement for last year and it was almost $26k. I was kind of shocked by that actually since I don't use that card for business at all.

Legos is form of savings. Guns and ammo are savings too. So you're saving over $100k a year.

What a fuckin joke! I've made tree-fiddy the past 3yrs, almost 7-figga the year before that, and still manage to save 50%. I just don't have run-a-way spending on meals, cars, clothes, daycare, or high priced housing. $18K on vacations for them seems reasonable.

Their tax rate is very accurate - 38-40% as AMT is killing their deductions/credits.

Funny how there mortgage is only $1.5m - thats not a very nice place in NYC and cant imagine what there paying to park those two useless cars. Take the damn subway.

I've got my 401K maxed and my ESPP maxed. That's almost $50K right there before I even see a dime in my bank account.

I can relate to these guys.

Only instead of vacations, I spend that on Lego and instead of student loans, charity, clothes, and childcare, I spend $100K on guns and ammo.

Legos & candles man, legos & candles.

Holy crap that's a lot on candles. I think the most I ever paid for candles was the one I bought from Virginia Hey (Farscape fame) at a con. Super nice lady, and she made a very exquisite candle.

They're doing well in some places. $9,500 clothes for four is very reasonable, I spend that much yearly for mink socks alone.

Is NYC really that expensive? 42k a year for childcare seems steep to me. Three vacations a year totaling 18k might be a little excessive to. I would probably cut back on the 18k donations to charity to but that's just me.

Some things are better calculated in absolute amounts, others as %. Do you give away more or less than 3.6% of your income?

no thats real and actually in some places thats cheap

Yup. The only reason that makes economic sense at all is because (presumably) both parents are making $250k/yr.

I know plenty of women who stayed at home for 5-7 years. Once the littlest spawnling is a ward of the state for 8-9 hours a day, then the economics change.

Although I am a little surprised that 1) there's no entry for "housekeeping" and 2) That'd have to be some crazy student loans.

Really? That's surprising to me. It has been awhile since our kids were that young but I seem to remember paying about $125 a week but it's been about six years since our youngest was in daycare. I live in the midwest to so that obviously affects pricing.

Urm.. I pay MORE than they do for car insurance... and I "make" around $15K a year.

Fucking Liberty Mutual.

(And no, it's not a sports car, and no, I'm not a teenager. It's a 2004 van, and I'm in my 40s.)

Peoria Illinois suburbs. A little town called Washington. We're about 3 hours south of Chicago. What kind of childcare was your sister paying for? Was it more like an actual school were they prep the kids for grade school/early learning or was it just a woman in her home watching kids all day.

Do you have full coverage on your 2004 van? Do you have clean record?
