Whew, what a hot deal! I missed out on the CompUSA Epson Perfection 610U/636U two weeks ago and the 1200U deal last week because they were out everywhere with the 1200U even harder to find nationwide. I was just getting depressed cause I needed to replace my Umax Astra 600S badly due to lack of drive for Win2K and I come across this deal! Can you say "STOKED"?! I just hope that J&R does in fact have enough in stock as the 1200U is very hard to come by. Thanks Steve0 for the awesome find!

My Two Cents:

I have the 1200U....great scanner. So much nicer than the $200-800 units we have at my office...faster, better color, better TWAIN drivers......


Only problem I can gripe, but it's my fault, is that the damn scanner is soo accurate, it picks up every little speck of dirt at higher resoloutions.

When doing high scans, the USB interface does limit speed a bit. My cpu is humming in at 20 percent, but USB usuage is maxed.


At $100, I would recommend this to anyone...might see if we can grab a couple of units for my department...

Quality of construction. 1200 U has metal guide and feels more solid than the 1240U. 1200U is all plastic, including guide rail. I have had both and kept the 1200U and sold the 1240U.

DOH! Got the 610U floor model a few weeks back for $35 from CompUSA... hmmm wondering if I should jump in on this too, and sell my 610U. What are the differences? Only the hardware resolution right?

Read several complaints on the user reviews from Cnet about dust accumulating on the uderside of the glass.

Supposedly there are 2 holes on the bottom of the unit that allow dust in. Has anybody who has this scanner noticed this also? I was thinking about picking this up, but that would definitely nix the deal.

thanks Steve0, I went to the J&R on my lunch (about 1pm) and picked up one. $108.24 w/tax. They had 4 left on the floor,go up to the 2nd floor,next to the cashier. Rep on the mezzanine said they had plenty in stock tho. Comes with this book " Digital Scanning and Photography by Dan Gookin ", the Rep on the 2nd floor informed me. btw thats J&R at 15 Park Rowby City Hall in NYC.

Nice scanner, excellent price! I disagree with anyone that says 1200 is 'better' than 1240 though. I believe someone made it sound like the 1240's don't support Win2k, running mine on Win 2k fine. 1240 is 42-bit altho to the casual user that means nothing. Only problem with the 1200 is they attract dust to the underside of the glass. Don't get me wrong, it is still one of, if not, the best scanners out there. To say it's 'better' than the new 1240 is just incorrect.

Three customers, including me, walked in at about 1:15 and simultaneously snagged the last 3 off the sales floor. I asked the salesman if he had more coming up but he didn't seem to know how to look up the inventory status. You might want to call ahead if you're going to the store.

I'm sure they must ship their Internet orders out of a separate area.

BTW If you bought a 1200U from CompUSA for $149 last week you should probably go cash in on your 14-day low price guarantee while J&R still has them in stock for the lower price.

Thanks for posting. Got in on the deal. Needed a decent scanner since the Umax Astra 2010U from Insight wasn't so hot in quality. I'm running Win2k, so I needed good software support as well

I just read through the first 100 messages of the CNET forum responses listed above, looking for this "dust problem", and out of 100 messages, there were 4 about dust as a problem, and 2 of them weren't even for the 1200 model (1 1240, 1 1640). Highly misleading to say that there is a big problem with dust ...

Still though, I checked the bottom of my 1200S, and there are some very small holes. I keep my scanner covered and it sits on a cushioned desk mat, so perhaps that is helping to keep dust out of mine.

My only complaint is that the TWAIN driver is just "so-so" ...
