I learned pretty quick, the difficult part is learning how not to stall the motha just getting going, and then learning that you need to shift to second *RIGHTFVCKINGNOW*.
Me to dad, 3 years ago: "Why the hell is there a first gear at all?"
Seriously, every MT vehicle I've driven has bounced off the limiter at a whopping 15mph.
Also amusing is starting on loose surfaces.

Just drive automatics since most cars are automatic anyway. I drive manuals but only because they are cheaper. I prefer automatics though.

Well why do you need to learn if no one arround you owns one? But even if you ever do need to drive one, it really doesn't take that long to learn. I learned in under a day and could drive one well in less than a week.
you can't really learn to drive stick in 1 day.

 I did. A friend's mom ask me to take her to the train station and drive her car back. She never asked if I could drive a stick and I didn't mention I never had. She drove there , handed me the keys and I drove home with zero problems from downtown Savannah, GA to Charleston, SC.
It isn't hard at all.

Of course I don't know, but I'm guessing I'd prefer an automatic. So I'd never buy a cheap car just to learn on. And I doubt any of my friend's parents want us learning on their car.
Renting one for a weekend, that's a good idea. But honestly, will I ever NEED to know? Maybe, but a small chance. I want to know just to know.

Nah, Fords. Pickups and a ZX2.
Also drove a truck with a "Creeper gear" once. NO speed, but UNGODLY torque. Dude called it "stump puller gear". I drove it a total of 100 feet pulling a tree over and getting clear of the fall.
