How are babies made?

When you go to the hospital and your waiting for the actual pushing part, are in a different room? Do they move you to a room specialized for pushing when you're ready for pushing the baby out?

What happens when you're in a shared room? Do you just sit there and listen to the other person pushing a baby out of her?

Something I was wondering,

Well, I imagine it depends on the hospital but in my experience you go to a labor and delivery room until the baby is delivered. They were all private room but I suppose it's possible there are hospitals out there with shared delivery rooms. Once the baby is born you get moved to a recovery room and the baby typically gets moved to the nursery for a period of time. Eventually the baby will join the mother in the recovery room assuming all goes well.

In our case, you go to the Labour & Delivery ward when you are in labour. It is a private room and also is the room where you child will be born. After the birth, and everything checks out, about 2 hours later you are shipped off to the maternity ward. Here is where you might be sharing a room, unless you have insurance that pays for private room...we were luck in that case.

The hospital my wife delivered in has all private rooms so we were in one room the whole time. Even after delivery, same room. There was another baby born in the room next to us 15 mins after our daughter was born and we didn't hear them at all.

In my experience, first stop is a little evaluation room. There they check dilation, baby position, and contraction strength/regularity. If birth seems imminent, you get to go to a 'delivery suite' ... otherwise you get to go home to wait some more.

Evaluation rooms and delivery suites are both one patient per room.

My sample size is 2, though. There may exist hospitals that double book their rooms, but I'm not familiar with such arrangements.

For those that are expecting, most hospitals offer maternity ward tours so that you're familiar with their location and policies ... field trip

I was born in 1979...at that time and in that hospital, it was a shared delivery room. I think it was a big open ward...my mom said they had beds with cages around the sides so the mother could grab the bars, not roll out, etc. She said the woman in the next bed stood up and was pacing around walking on the bed (since she was basically caged in the bed). Sounds crazy! I think they had maternity rooms with 2 beds.

We just had one 3 weeks ago. Labor/Delivery was a large, fairly palatial private room. Maternity has 12 private and 12 double rooms. They basically fill each room with singles before they start doubling up, so you don't get stuck in a double unless 24 mothers are already in recovery, which does happen but not all that often. The private maternity rooms were tiny, but had beds facing picture windows with fairly lovely views.

Pretty nice place I have to say.
