How are crop circles made?

I've seen a few pictures of crop circles online and some of them look very large and complex in design (even resembling fractal art). so I was wondering how they are created.

While I'd like to beleive that those are made by some group of people who practice Earth art(as opposed to ET's), I find it very odd that no creater ever shows up or got caught while making those things.

anyone know the truth?

farmers get bored, so they jump on their tractors and go randomely mowing down parts of their crops. they are usually in a drunken state while they are doing this. thats why when the police ask, they claim they saw nothing.

A simple tool, actually. It's called a spring harrow. It drags behind a tractor. The uniformity comes from it following the tractor, obviously, but also the fact that the tines that churn the earth are stationary.

nah I think those circles are too big and complex for a tractor to draw them by going back and forth printer style.

btw, I found a movie of a crop circle being made. quite impressive. probably fake.

Actually I saw a show on this once on TV, and it explained completely how this is done... it was actually done by a couple of students... They designed the shape beforehand, and went in at night to do it...

They use a piece of wood, with the 2 ends attached to a string... then they just hold on to the string, and step on the piece of wood to "push" down the crops (that's why they are not cut, but looks like some heavy objects landed and pushed them down)...

As for the perfect circles they make, I believe they use a piece of string, fixed at the center of the circle and walk around the end of the string with it fully extended... like when u use a piece of string to draw circles...

That show videotaped the 3 students doing it from start to finish... only take them a couple of hours... and they showed the video in fast forward so you can see exactly how they did it....

here's a page explaining how the plants inside circles are bent 90ª at about an inch off the ground instead of being flattened down using a physical object.

So, it's all done with planks and bits of string, is it?

besides, how can anyone make THIS just by pressing down a peice of wood !? :Q

Even the most intelligent people I know do not have the grace or coordination to pull off a crop circle. I suppose the clumsier ones were done with planks and strings... there is a pretty obvious difference between the hoaxes and the others.

I can't even get my Spin Art or Etch a Sketch drawings to turn out right.

They have contests in Britain for crop circle making. The show I saw on discovery channel had some amazing looking crop circles.

I saw a show,can't remember the name or station, but it's a series about mysteries and unexplained stuff. They did a show on crop circles, very interesting. The crops inside the design are supposed to show chemical and physical differences compared to crops outside of the design.(Some scientist on the show said this.) They are very interesting.

BCYL - I think I saw the exact program that you did. They used 2x4's and pressed down the corn or whatever.

Crop circles started in england about 20 years ago. 2 or 3 years ago the guys who got plastered at a pub and started the whole thing admitted to doing it. It's relatively simple to do for anyone with a little common sense. String boards and a prepared pattern with measured dimensions is all you need. Walk in on the tractor tracks and tamp the grain with a board and use strings at set points to measure distances. There was a special on PBS that a few people have refered to that showed 3 guys do a majorly complicated crop circle (huge, multiple circles and a very complex pattern) in about 5 hours. I bet if you do a location study you will find most crop circles are done near college campuses....
