How are the sound cards that come on the 2xxx/3xxx video cards?

Are they better than the usual onboard soundcards you get and how do they work?

There is no sound card on any video card. You might be able to patch in audio and have it output via HDMI connections, but that's about it.

I believe the HD 2xxx/3xxx only have connections that allow you to hook up onboard/discrete sound cards and route it through the DVI/HDMI connection -- there is no sound processing going on in there. Never tried it so I don't know if there's any other software/config involved.

I see, so whats the point of having this feature then? Does it improve sound quality?

It's so you can pass both a video and audio signal through a single cable (HDMI) to your AV receiver/TV/whatever

The only point I'm aware of is so that you can output both sound and video to a monitor/TV through one HDMI connection. You still need a sound card.
