Here is what I have decided on. I will order it in a few hours unless someone has a better suggestion. Total cost is $232.97 from newegg.

ASUS P8H67-M LX (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel H67 SATA 6Gb/s Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core i3-2100 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I32100

Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model CT2KIT25664BA1339

I have been out of the hardware loop for ages. Do you guys consider this an okay combo? I already have a new lian li case, psu, sata hdd's and sata dvdrw, though I may add an ssd. I am sure I can get the parts somewhat cheaper and will possibly change the memory to decrease the costs, depending upon hot deals.

ASUS P8H67-M PRO/CSM (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel H67 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I52500K

Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Desktop Memory Model CT2KIT51264BA1339

I had thought about getting a Intel Core i3-2100T Sandy Bridge 2.5GHz 2 x 256KB L2 Cache 3MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 35W Dual-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I32100T and just 4gb of memory but thought why not spend the extra cash for the 2500K and extra memory. I am content with my current system but just want a new build and either the i3 with 4gb or the i5 with 8gb is over kill my usage but hey it's fun to build computers.

If both are overkill for your usage, why not just go with the cheaper choice? It's not like you build the computer any different with the more expensive i5 and 8GB of ram.

I agree. I may just go with the i3 and 4gb. I just have the extra parts laying around and hate to not use them.

For us to give you a recommendation, we need to know what the computer will be used for. If it's just web surfing and such, the i3 will do a great job. If you're a gamer, do video encoding, run heavy Excel spreadsheets, etc., then the i5 will do a better job.

 Also, it depends on the price as to whether the combo is a good deal or not.

Thanks for the replies guys. I stay sleepy/rushed and should have been more in-depth with my previous posts.

I do not game. I tinker around with Debian for the most part and I am in a gui only about 50% of the time - when I do, it's running dwm, so it's very light on resources. I occasionally do video encoding, watch various formats using mplayer but mostly just play with code/scripts, listen to flac, and surf the net with chromium. I will also be using the machine for storage and would like for it to run 24/7.

I have an older am3 combo currently that is decent on power consumption but plan to use it as a basic family machine once I get this new build going.

The stuff that you've picked out is perfectly fine for those purposes. Intel HD Graphics are well-supported in newer kernel and X.org versions, so you should be fine there as well. About the only other advice I have is to make sure that you get the mobo and CPU combo.

Thanks mfenn, the combo inspired me to go with those by saving a little cash. I'm ordering is right now.
