How bad did I mess up?

I'm looking for a few opinions on what I should do:

I ordered a new Motherboard,CPU, and memory to replace my recently fried 4200+&AN8SLI. Unfortunately during the process of deciding, I accidentally added the wrong wish list to my cart. I ordered a E4600, P5WDH, and 2gigs of XMS2 6400. I meant to get the other wish list which was a E6600, GA-965p-DS3, and the XMS2 6400. The Egg has a 15% restock fee, do you think it would be worth it to return the Mobo and CPU for the later?

I was looking for around 3ghz air cooled, and admittedly the raid 5 would be useful in a year or so when I upgrade and this PC and it would become my new server.

Thoughts?

Has it already shipped? I'm sure if you call them up and explain the situation they'll waive the fee as long as you don't open the boxes.

Both setups should easily be capable of 3ghz, however.

Well as far as overclocking the E6400(assume thats what you meant) and the P5WDH will be limited because that CPU needs a fairly high FSB for good overclocks and that 975 chipset board probably won't go much past 350fsb. But you should be able to get at least 2.8ghz 350x8.

IMO it's not worth 15% to return it, as 2.8ghz won't be much difference for 3.0ghz performance wize. And the 975 chipset is the more mature and should be trouble free, and has the added benny of raid5.

If your hearts really set on a higher overclock, you can call newegg and explain the situation and ask if you pay shipping both ways if they will waive the 15%. They are very customer service oriented and will likely agree. Or you can send a PM to their CS rep here on Anandtech at "Newegg support"

*edit*
Just realize you may be talking about an E4300 cpu, if thats the case then you probably can get the overclock your looking for on that board because of the 9x multi on the E4300. 9x350=3150

Why won't the 975 go past 350? Chipset or quality limitation?

Let's also assume that newegg will take back the CPU+mobo without issue, would do the swap? (assuming that you would find the Raid/Firewire/Wireless useful)

It kinda a contradiction saying that you want long term stability (at least a year) out of an over clock, but that's what I'm looking for, I also would like the ability to slap a Quad core in there when the prices come down, both seem to support them via the documentation.

thanks for your insight...

Call them now, tell them what you've said here. As long as you don't open anything and make it clear you plan on purchasing the same components (just different models) you can probably avoid any restocking/return policies. Ask the CSR if you should just refuse receipt if you can catch the delivery guy. That'll save you one way shipping and turn around time.

Also, never, ever, never pay extra for rush processing. I've probably ordered from Newegg 50+ times and as long as I get my order in before 6pm EST or so, it ships the same day.

Ok. I talked with a CSR, she recommended that I refuse shipment when It arrives. This will avoid any potential RMA issues. So It looks like I have a clean slate.

I'm going to order this:
GA-965P-DS3
E6600
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB

Would anyone recommend any modifications to this that are +/- $50?
I would like firewire & Raid 5, but a good OC and stability are more important.

Thanks again!!

Hehe, I was on the horn with them when you posted this, also, I'm not sure where I saw this, but I saw a big thing on Newegg and how the "rush processing" works and how the rush orders are seperated from the common orders. It probably is all BS, but clearly I was in a rush to get mah parts!

Glad it worked out.

I would add an after-market cooler for sure for OC and stability (and noise!). Tuniq is usually OOS and overpriced at Newegg, but the Thermaltake Big Typhoon, Thermalright Ultra 120, and Scythe Infinity are all good choices for around $50.

The DS3 should have at least 1 firewire port or header I would think? You could also take a look at some of the 650i/680i mobos as they definitely have firewire and an onboard RAID controller capable of RAID 5, but the trade-off would be OC/stability. Some people have great experiences with the boards, but I think they're still raw and unpolished overall. I'd shy away from software RAID 5 anyways, probably best to wait and add it later via add-in card with a hardware controller if you really want it.

Also, I don't doubt they separate rush orders vs. normal, just they're so efficient with normal orders the end result is the same.

Onboard RAID 5 is usually crappy performance and limited to only 4 disks (e.g. roughly 3 effective with parity). You will want an add in PCI-e RAID card for good RAID 5 performance to use 5 or 6 drives.

I'd go with the Ultra 120 (I will be getting it in my new build in the next few weeks). It's supposedly much easier to install than the Tuniq, and you can swap the fan easily.

Yeah really. I wouldn't attempt RAID 5 with on-board controllers. They are for RAID 0 or RAID 1.

P.S. 975X maxing out @350FSB?! More like 450FSB. As a matter of fact, I'd go as far as to pick 975X over P965 for E6400, leaving just E6300 for P965.

My observation is E6300 and E6400 have 2mb cache, should be best in P965 chipset. The E6600 has 4mb cache and do best in P975, because E6600 have 9x multiplier don't need very high FSB to get great OC result, so the P975 with ~450max fsb give best performance per clock.
