I had all four of mine yanked last june. The bottom two were impacted. Only used one painkiller. The most annoying thing was the swelling. Other than that, things were perfect.

My bottom two were impacted and I had them pulled a couple years ago. The procedure was pretty annoying as it seemed to take ages. I was lying there in cold sweat. The teeth had to be broken into small pieces to be able to fit out of the spot. After the procedure I got a small fever but it went away overnight.

A two-three days after that a little sore and some swelling but sligthly stronger pain killer took care of the pain. Overall not that bad and I'm glad I had it done.

I remember when I had mine out when I was 17. They were pretty nasty - had to give me a general anesthetic to do it. A couple were so tough to get out that they had to chisel and break them.

The worst part was spending a week in bed, a bit zonked on Percodan and with nothing to watch on TV but the Democratic National Convention.

Well, the Percodan wasn't bad.

All four of my wisdom teeth were taken out out right before XMas '99. The X-rays revealed that all four were growing almost completely horizontally. Coupling this with the fact that all the teeth were deep beneath gum and/or bone, and it was painfully obvious that teeth & bone needed to be broken. I was big-time nervous before the surgery, but once the barrage of shots were finished, two hours had elapsed before I really knew it. I just took home gauze, and a prescription for pain-killers I never used. Besides the constant changing of gauze during the first several hours, I coped with the discomfort and pain quite easily.

Be a smart man---open up your mouth, and let the friendly surgeon cut you up!

do you people just follow one another? well I tell ya the pain only lasted for only a week when my wisdom teeth grew out but eventually they will become like normal and painless given time to heal on it's own, you will have stronger healthier teeth this way

you'll probably have the choice of general anesthesia.. you won't feel a thing during surgury i was unlucky and my parents forced local anesthesia on me.. got to stay awake my lower wisdom teeth were under bone still, so the guy went in and sliced doors in my gums, then pulled out a mini buzzsaw and sawed a chunk of bone off b4 prying the teeth out. surprisingly it didn't hurt, but it was freaky as hell strong meds after make for a pretty painless healing experience.

Mine were all impacted...my jaw ached more than a broken leg (had one of those already) and my jaw was so swolen, I looked like a bulldog with the huge square jaw and all.

IT means you'll be home from school longer and you'd better get them removed pronto mas before one of em severes a nerve.

---> Oh and BTW as for the moment of the surgery itself, it's absolutely the funniest thing ever.. they hook you up, you hear your heartbeat, they stick the IV into you and then they put the oxygen mask on, put the anaesthetic or whatever into your IV, you count to 12 and you won't make it past 8.. 3 seconds later you wake up kinda cranky and the surgery is done you remember nothing of it and your mouth is filled to the brim with gauze..

I never got to hear my heartbeat . And they had to gas you? All I got was a stupid pinprick in my elbow, didn't hurt too much. And amen to the gauze, cept should read, bloddy gauze (I was bleeding for at least a half hour after I woke up).

<----------------Was eating solid food 2 days after having all 4 wisdom teeth removed

funny this topic should come up.

i got four wisdom teeth removed on monday. on monday i couldn't talk and it was very difficult to eat when i didn't have gauze in my mouth. couldn't feel half my tongue and my chin area was still swollen.

i guess i recover fast because this morning i had a cheeseburger and this evening i ate italian food. pizza, pasta, and garlic bread. =) its still a little tender but i think it'll be alright. i'm taking antibiotics and stopped the pain medications. antibiotics were prescribed just to make sure i didn't get any infections... and the pain meds... well ... dont need those cuz they make me nauseous anyway. =)

Could be worse, could be like my sister when she had her teeth pulled: she woke up half way through the operation and tried to mumble that she was in severe pain (duh!, she's having her teeth pulled). Turns out the doctor had broken her jaw and she had it wired shut like a steel trap for eight weeks. Could eat anything but McDonald's shakes. Gained a lot of weight, lost it really quick because she's an excercise phreak. She never got a bill for the operation though.

"Put it this way - the 24 hours of agony you put up with having them pulled is FAR better than the lifetime of problems you'll have if you keep them in. "

"i'm probably an idiot, but i decided i'm not going to get mine taken out. i'll take my chances... "

Well, I actually had to do that. I had all four of my wisdom teeth impacted, and I didn't have very good dental coverage at the time. I did not have the money needed to have them done, so I had to take my chances. Now, there are serious complications that can arise from not having them taken care of, but I've noticed that dentist's seem to give you the worst case scenario all the time. I basically had to just deal with them, and after awhile they just broke up and were broken down under my gumline. I had some days where I had some pretty heavy pain, and I developed an abcess in one, but it passed with the help of some Advil and the abcess healed itself on it's own. I was regularly going to the doctor during this time to make sure I was gettting any serious infections from it ( I had good health insurance). When I got a better job later on and had good dental coverage, I had a complete checkup done on them and they are all gone. The dentist told me that the body will break them down on it's own, but infections are always a danger. He said I was very lucky and I believe him. Now, that being said, I would suggest getting them out if you can. If I had the money to do it when I needed them done, I would have. I was lucky and didn't have any complications, but you may not be.

It was the WORST pain I have ever felt, I couldnt eat solid food for a week. I think mine was an extreme situation because I waited til the last minute so infection had started already. Take it from me and dont wait. Still remember getting nauseous from swallowing blood. I think I'm gonna go puke now

My mom is a dental hygenist. She says they have Motrin 600's and Motrin 800's as well. Damn that must kick the pain out.

I must be the only person on earth who loved having them pulled. They give you some great drugs that make all the pain go away and make you feel very nice.

Oh yeah. This was back in 1984. They were like horse pills. Take one and 1/2 hour later you could have hit me with a 2x4 and I wouldn't have felt it.

mmmm...motrin.

to tell you the truth I kinda enjoyed my experience...I has zero pain during or after the proceedure. They knock you completely out during the process and then they give you great drugs afterwards. The key to not having any problems is finding a really good dentist. If you have some schmuck that is going to rush through the process then you are screwed, but if you have a good dentist then I wouldn't worry about it at all....if you have ever had a root canal, those are ubelievably more painful...or at least that is what I hear.....Just don't bother worrying about it.

Actually, from reading all of this, it looks to me that there were only a few week+ pain disasters. It looks like the majority of people have pain for a couple or few days. And a few were fine less than two days later!

I had mine taken out two years ago. My appointment was for 7:30 AM, and I was nervous. So, to make sure I went to sleep quickly while in the chair, I stayed up until 3:30 the night before. I got there, and they gave me a little laughing gas... only about 10 seconds worth. Then they stuck an IV in me and pumped in some of the most powerful stuff I've ever felt. From the time he said, "It's injecting now," it took less than 15 seconds for me to be out cold. After about 10 seconds, I could feel my legs going numb, right before I passed out -- a very strange feeling.

Anyway, I was under for just under an hour. My cheeks were swollen for a couple of days, but I had almost no pain. I took one Tylenol w/ Codine tab, but only because I felt like "I should" since I had a whole bottle of them. By Tuesday morning, I was eating regularly again.

---
edit: I'm in the Cincinnati area. If anyone wants to know the oral surgeon I had, let me know. He did a great job.

I was lucky, all of my wisdom teeth came in straight and proper, nothing impacted at all.

I had the right top and bottom wisdom teeth removed 2 years ago, due to the bottom wisdom tooth being cavity ridden and breaking apart, but didnt have dental coverage so only had one side done. It was easy, they just gave me a couple good novacaine shots and used a big pair of pliers and they popped right out. I think we were done in 25 mins? If you split the process in half, then you can still eat solid food by munching on the left or right side of your mouth. Might help. Then again, not having to come into the dentist again is a good thing too!

Im getting the left side of my face done at the end of the month.
