How big a difference is a VGA connection vs DVI?

How big a difference is a VGA connection vs DVI on LCD monitors in terms of image quality, resolution, detail or any other benefits that one would need to consider in buying an LCD?

Depends on the monitor. Most monitors with a dvi connection require very ittle setup time to get the image to look right whereas with a vga connection you usuallyhave to fiddle around with a lot of settings to get a good picture and even then its usually a little worse than the dvi equivalent. I've used mostly samsung monitors in the past and the vga quality was very good on those. Now I'm using the monitor in my sig and the difference between vga and dvi is quite large.

As long as it's below 1600x1200 or 1680x1050, you probably would not be able to tell the difference.

It's not huge, but it is noticeable. I'd buy a $20 DVI cable just so I wouldn't have to mess with DVI to VGA adapters. Also, you'll never have to adjust the size or geometry of the image because it will always be a perfect 5:4 or 16:10 ratio with DVI. I think my colors look better over DVI too, but I really didn't begin serious tweaking until I got my DVI cable in and the DVI cable I purchased was much better quality than the VGA cable I was using. I have a Samsung 930B panel.

HUGE. at least for me it was. using the analog the screen was blurry everywhere, and everything had a very small jitter to it. switched to the dvi, and wow, crisp still sharp. like night and day.

this was at a college computer i was setting up with a new gateway widescreen ... 21 inch? i use a couple 22'' crts at home

I have a 19" 1280x1024 LCD monitor.......huge difference going from VGA to DVI. DVI is just so much better. Besides, it's a cheap upgrade and will improve picture quality, if you're willing to buy a new video card (ever) you should be willing to get a decent cable type. (you don't need an expensive cable, just worry about the end connectors being dvi, this also applies to tvs using the best possible inputs you can)

same here. On an higher end acer (i know, high end acer?) 19" for my girlfriend, the vga sucked and had 'shadows' on everything, dvi cable cleared it up, looks super sharp and nice. Same thing on my 32" lcd, vga was decent, dvi is just sharp and perfect. Some mfgs just arent invensting much into the vga tech from what it seems.
