That's what keeps me from going HD. The TV's fail at a ridiculous rate compared to CRT sets. I see people reporting 3-5 yrs. life all the time in Amazon reviews.

well, a lot of the failures are probably fixable, though.

my old HD bugged out after about 4 years last fall. it worked, but it would take several minutes to power on.

brought it to a TV repair shop, fixed a broken capacitor, and it was like new for far less than it would have cost to buy a new one.

I've had my 32 inch 1080p LCD tv for over 3 years now. It's an LG and for a one bedroom apartment it does me fine. 42 or 46 would be great but I just bought a new bed instead.

I recently upgraded from 37" at 10 ft to 55 inches at 10ft. I was worried 55 inches was going to be too big. I could have easily gone much larger.

I have a 42" sharp 1080p LCD at about 5'. Works for me as a computer monitor and occasional tv.

46" and about 10-12' away. IMO it's a bit too big for that distance. I would not go bigger than that.

40" was perfect

I would not get 50-60' inch unless I was AT LEAST 15' away from the TV. It messes with our eyes and gives us headache when too close.

Pretty much same. I mean I wasn't worried that it was going to be too big, I just stuck with 55" because of price. Increasing TV sizes aren't terribly expensive until a certain point, and 55" seems to be the current breaking point where each size jump is pretty pricey.

12' away from a 130" 2.35:1 screen. It's the equivalent of a 106" screen for 16:9 content.

I could use a projector with resolution higher than 1080p but they are too expensive.

I would love to see 2.35:1 projectors come into prominence like they are on the 21:9 monitors of late. Then I wouldn't have to worry about zooming my lens when I want to watch something cinemascope.

Yep. Especially in the sales. 55" and 32" right now is the most manufactured so they are the cheapest of the TV's for sale for their respective price per inch. I picked up my last 55" as a smart led thin TV for only $400 + tax. Hard to beat that price.

Once you sit at proper viewing angle/distance there is no going back.

Most do not. View at proper distance for screen size that is.
I have a 90" projector image, with seating as close as 9 feet. This set up is full surround of course, with tower main speakers and a very large centre channel (all Paradigm Reference Studio), as well as a 13" front firing sub (SVS PB13-Ultra).

I also have a 43" TV in the living room with seating at about 12 feet. It has much lower end but decent Paradigm speakers, but just the front three. No rear surrounds at all.

I watch the living room TV way, way more, and have no desire whatsoever to increase the size of the living room TV or even upgrade the speakers.

I have a 60" screen in two separate rooms. The main living room has a sectional, so anywhere from 5 to 11 feet, but my usual spot is at ~11 feet. The other screen is in an otherwise-unfurnished room, but I have a folding captains chair (HAH!) setup in the "sweet spot" that's about 8-9 feet away.

55" and about 12'. Next one will be a 70", 80" if the price comes down to sub $2k in a couple years.

This. I've been eyeing the 70"ers, but I'm content enough with my 55 for now.

I had a projector with a 120" screen and 14 ft viewing distance and that was pretty great. But it died after a couple years and I didn't feel like spending the money on a new one.

I don't have a real a TV, I just use my monitor which is 30in and I sit about 5 feet away. I use it for Netflix and Amazon stuff as I don't have cable either.

Our old 32" SD set has lasted a very long time, and I expect it to continue that way. We sit about 10' away.
that's not my experience, and anyway for most people a planned obsolence of 5 years is good enough not to make it totally frustrating if you have money although I guess everyone prefers being able to sell the older tv or use it as a secondary tv.
