As long as you have have a video card powerful enough to effectively drive that resolution, and the proper desk/viewing distance/angle, then there is no such thing as too big.

With my current setup though, I think 30" would be too large. I'd have to pull my desk out from the wall, or rotate my desk so I could mount the display on the wall.

I've had the 244t for 1.5 years and let me assure you, there is no "neck turning" required. lol! If anything you merely increase your peripheral vision. I find going bigger helps most with MGing or sniping in games like DOD:S where you need to concentrate on a small section without plastering your nose on the screen. You want to have those small areas larger, but with just as much or more definition to pick out that elusive trigger man hiding somewhere out there!!!

If you're a gamer then yeah 24" is probably big enough. But if you're big into multitasking and doing five things at once on your PC, or do a lot of graphics designing (i.e. photoshop) or anything of that nature, a 30" screen with its 2560x1600 is probably greatly preferred over 1920x1200 (yeah dual monitors can meet that need also but dual 24" would probably be too much of a space hog for a lot of people and doesn't have significantly more screen space than a 30"). Though anything above that may be a little too much as you'd probably start running out of room.

I have a 22 widescreen, but prefer the 19" crt for gaming. Have a choice of resolutions and don't need to upgrade vid card as often.

I have a 24" but wouldn't be upset if I got a 30" to replace it as a gift...I don't think I'd want anything larger than a 30" though...I voted for 30"...

I voted 24" because I think that is the sweet spot in terms of price/resolution/performance/features. In reality, "as big as you can handle" is probably the correct answer.

I live in a fairly small apartment, so I wanted a compact display capable of 1080p with good performance and inputs. In the end, I went with the NEC LCD2690WUXi (see link in sig).

The problem is a 24 inch monitor is $570 US at Dell before shipping and taxes. For just $230 more you can get a 37 inch Westy and still get HD rez. That's what I went for instead. And 22 inches was just not impressive at all compared to my aged 19 inch CRT.

Agreed. Sure, I bet a 30" LCD would be awesome, but you would probably have some difficulty getting smooth frames with many games. I would imagine that a dual card video setup would pretty much be mandatory for truly smooth gaming on a 30" LCD.

In my opinion - no such thing as monitor too small. Gaming or not. In a perfect world

In reality though, other factors are important as well - like available space in a room, or gpu able to handle big native resolutions well. But that was already mentioned.

Not to flame, but just so other users can consider, the 37in Westinghouse runs at roughly the same resolution as a 24inch PC display (1920x1080 on the 37, 1920x1200 on the 24inch) so your pixel size is going to be significantly bigger on the TV. This can cause problems when viewing pictures/reading text as things are not as sharp. You can combat this by sitting farther away, which you will have to do anyway with a larger display. That said, everyone I've seen who has the Westinghouse 37 is very happy with it. I considered it but it my current room/desk setup wouldn't allow for the right distance.

Im loving me 22 inch, and 22 inch seems to be the sweet spot in terms of price.

Point well taken. I did play Chronicles of Riddick on my friend's 42 inch plasma which runs at 1024x768 and I couldnt say the low resolution was dissatisfactory. In fact the image quality blew me away despite the low pixel count. Everyone is different.

I guess the sky is the limit but for gaming use I probably wouldn't want anything bigger than a 24''. I've gamed on bigger and it's just too much to handle you can't look at the whole screen at the time. it also really depends how far away you are from the screen.

also you have no option for a 20-20.1in

30" or bigger, as long as the res scales up too. Gaming on the 30" is awesome. It took me a few days to get used to gaming on the 30". Now, looking back at the old 20" I'm thinking how was I ever able to game on that little thing?

actually, according to Digital Cinema standards (I just found the spec sheet), we'll need an lcd with 4096 x 2560, which would end up about 52" or so. This would accomodate full Digital Cinema standard movies as well as retain a 16:10 aspect ratio that is the most popular ratio for widescreen gaming.

http://www.dcimovies.com/DCI_Digital_Cinema_System_Spec_v1.pdf

"The DCDM shall provide an image structure container that consists of either a 2K (2048
x 1080) or 4K (4096 x 2160) image file as defined in Table 1. It is expected that the
image structure shall use one of the two containers such that either the horizontal or
vertical resolution is filled. For example, a 4K image file with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio would
require an image structure of 4096 x 1714, therefore filling the horizontal resolution of
the 4K container."

I didn't read the whole thread. Just looking at the poll options. And the only one that really matters is not there. There should be a choice for "It's all relative to the individual's needs and wants.". That would have been what I'd have chosen.

honestly I think for normal usage a 19-20 " is good enough
I don't use wide screen effect anyway.
i know its good for spreadsheets and all but generally my type of usage don't require this

there is no "big enough" IMO.
I currently run a 24inch LCD with 2 19inch CRTs on the desk. I have also a 27inch 720P just a few feet over to the right that I can use as an additional monitor if I want to (makes a decent game screen for my older box with not so high end video card)
