I live in Philadelphia. I think Eli is overrated and the beneficiary of some great defense but he does have two rings and that buys you a lot of "playing like shit" time.

I'm finding Gruden's commentary on MNF more and more unbearable...

Wow, yeah. All I caught was him enthusing over Luck but it was creepily over the top, like he hadn't been allowed to say anything to anyone for months and was now suddenly let loose.

Wow, I wonder where all the morons who argued with me and said RGIII was "better" than Luck have gone. Their silence is deafening.

I never was an RG3 fan but I don't hate him. He's a freak athlete but I haven't seen much progression as a QB. As a fan of Philadelphia Eagles, I hope him continued lack of success for Washington.

But enough about RG3. Let's talk about you. You seem hurt. Here's a picture to cheer you up.

I'm oddly aroused.

Anyway, I'm not making fun of RGIII -- I'm making fun of the fools who were so insistent he was better than Luck.

Was a freak athlete before several knee surgeries. I don't know if we have any idea what kind of athlete he is today.

Next year is the last year of his contract so it will be interesting to see what happens. He's going to have to light it up next year to secure a new contract.

Seems to me legit starting QBs are getting rarer and harder to find with the diluted league. How many teams have a real starter right now? In five years if Winston and Mariotta suck like I think they will people are gonna be wishing they had Eli and RG3.

RG3 will get money from someone unless he keeps getting hurt.

Good starters have always been hard to find and obviously it got harder when the NFL talent pool was diluted when it expanded by 4 teams in the 90s/2000s. Even back when the NFL had 26 and 28 teams, quality starters were tough to find.

I tried explaining this to my friends a few years ago regarding Romo. Do you really want to go finding a new QB when the one you have is more than serviceable? Stuff the debate if he's "elite" or not, he's at minimum a quality starter and you don't just toss that aside.

I guess they liked the cadre of talent like Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, Clint Stoener and Drew Henson.

Yeah, as much as I make fun of him, Romo is definitely a good NFL starter. Some have also declared this a golden age of the QB position, but I can't help but wonder if that's due more to the increased rule enforcement on defenders contacting receivers or not. I have to think that Unitas, Bradshaw, Staubach, Montana, Marino, Elway, and Kelly would be lighting up defenses just as much if they played with the same rule set. Also, look at the state of the NFL running back today -- it has basically become a commodity, job-by-committee position today. Gone are the days of the Paytons, Campbells, Dorsetts, Sanders, and Smiths tearing it up.

As I mentioned though, bad quarterbacking is definitely not a recent occurrence. Look at my Colts in the 80s -- we had the likes of Mike Pagel, Jack Trudeau, and Gary Hogeboom as starters. Trudeau was like a cockroach -- that guy REALLY sucked but always stuck around as the starter when the Colts "QB experiment of the year" went awry.

Which, to me, makes what Chip Kelly has accomplished so far quite amazing. It's a small sample size, I know, but he took a team in absolute disarray, one that won only 4 games the season before, and turned them into a legitimate near-contender/contender without a truly talented QB.

The gaudy stats Foles put up last year were a mirage, more a consequence of Chip's offense as a whole than of Foles core talent, as this excellent article makes clear.

In 2013, Foles started horrendously but then got on a roll that didn't end until the playoffs. However, his 119.2 QB rating was misleading because it included a number of poor throws that luckily went unpunished, such as dropped interceptions or actual interceptions called back on penalty. The most important fact that people forget about the NFL's QB rating is that it's really a measure of the offense, not specifically the quarterback; most passers can throw a bubble screen, but how effective it is really isn't on him.

Nick Foles has struggled this season, both under heavy pressure and otherwise.

Now, did Foles play poorly in 2013? Not at all. He was pretty good (our No. 17-rated QB), but he certainly wasn't as good as his NFL passer rating suggested.

I personally think Mark Sanchez will thrive in Chip's system. Do I think the Eagles will win the SB? Uh, not necessarily, no. As you get closer to that mountain top, it really does make a crucial difference to have a stud like Luck or a wizard like Peyton on hand.*

But Chip Kelly, bless his pudgy little soul, has made the Eagles a contender, and he has done so with the talent he has had on hand.

You have to keep in mind this is the NFL -- any given Sunday and all. Luck (not Andrew) and circumstance do play their part. And Kelly has put the Eagles in a position to be part of the conversation, which, in the end, is all a fan can ask.

*Otoh, Jim Plunkett and Trent Dilfer have rings, so . . .

Being a freak athlete means very little. JaMarcus Russel was a freak athlete and how did that end up?

I notice you didn't have anything nice to say about Dilfer. Oh, that is because he is sucks and is also a terrible TV personality.

Yep!

I still remember Mel Kiper reaming the Colts for not drafting Trent Dilfer ("They can't win with Jim Harbaugh at QB!") and instead taking Trev Alberts and Marshall Faulk.

You say this, and I agree, but of course this is a year where a RB is setting a record or two and will be close a couple more.

Yeah, AP was an exception too. The NFL will always have a couple of marquee guys at the position, but remember the 80s and the sheer number of elite backs? You had the likes of:

Payton
Dorsett
Campbell
Dickerson
Thurman Thomas
John Riggins
Marcus Allen
George Rogers
Billy Sims
Bo Jackson

and a few others.

And Barry Sanders played in 1989.
