Well... light does also generate heat when it's absorbed by a thing, and there are ways of producing light other than by heating atoms. (But yes, in this scenario, the light is of course being produced by a bunch of really hot atoms.)

People also don't understand just how much empty space is out there. They're somewhat accustomed to sci-fi shows where there's always a planet or star or asteroid field nearby, or else simply have absolutely no concept of just how damn big astronomical distances are.

The story continues to claim that the sun will then react to the outburst by attempting to cool itself down and in the process, will then turn blue as a result.

....and the Sun turning blue would not be because of cooling, but because of heating. If its EM spectrum would shift that far, my guess is that there'd also be a big increase in the amount of ultraviolet radiation produced.
