In America there is no excuse for being poor. A person has to TRY to not be successful.

Amp's Seven Steps to Not Being a Poor Loser.

Step 1) Get a GED
One of a hundred places to get a GED.

Step 2) Get financial aid to attend college.
College Funding for Poor People

Step 3) Find a local community college.
Community Colleges

Step 4) Transfer to a four year university.
Four Year Colleges

Step 5) Find a job.
Jobs for people with degrees.

Step 6) Don't buy fancy rims/electronics/cars.
Don't buy me!

Step 7) Send Amp a thank you card.
Card for Amp

Is it that hard? Let's cut out all housing programs, all federal aid, and send them links to this post instead.

A lot of the most poor people in the U.S. that I have seen, those who are homeless and on the streets, are severely mentally ill. What about those people? Do you seriously expect a schizophrenic to be able to follow your instructions when they can't even get the medication they need to lead a productive life?

What about the uneducated person who didn't get this advice when she was younger, and now has to work to take care of several children. Many poor folks have responsibilities OTHER than themselves and are struggling to make ends meet. Sure perhaps they made poor choices, but that may be because noone was there to educate them in the first place.

As for sending them links, did it occur to you that many poor may not have Internet or email access?

I don't know whether your post is sarcastic or not, but if it is serious, it wasn't very well thought out. :disgust:

That's a small portion of the poor people in the country. But if they have mental problems there isn't much we can do. Since they are beyond hope let's leave them out

I never said it wouldn't be work. I'm only saying it's their choice.

Graduate highschool, goto college, get a job. How's that not thought out? Maybe they have some excuse, I don't really care, they can stay poor.

Like, what's there to argue? I'm telling people why we shouldn't feel sorry for poor people. I could care less if the poor people follow my advice.

You don't even have to go to college if you want a decent paying job. Go for a job in civil service. It's easy to get a job [as long as you have a high school diploma or equivelent] and it's hard to loose the job. Plus, you get regular promotions and raises and excellent retirement benefits if you stick it out for 20 years.

Or, better yet, join the Army, the bare minimum to get in is a GED and the ability to pass a physical [and the desire to get through boot camp...]

Amp and ntdz, I assume, mananged to drag themselves up by their bootstraps after growing up in the poorest of families, with crummy educations, low expectations and family obligations that required them to get jobs as soon as they could work. It is very admirable of them to pass on their knowledge of their experiences in elevating themselves to the middle class with nothing more than hard, honest work and a desire to live the American dream. They overcame adversity of every kind, living lives worthy of a movie on the Hallmark channel.

Give me a break. Of course it sounds easy to you guys, you probably haven't had to try it. And you seem to be basing your assessment of the problem on this idea that poor people are just lazy bastards. While I'm sure some of them are, I think most of them have obstacles that would tough to overcome for a lot of people, you two jokers included.

I'm sure that would work for some people, and that IS what a lot of people do. You don't think it's just pure chance the there aren't a lot of rich people in the army, do you? The thing is, a lot of people can't pass those basic requirements, and there are a surprising number of jobs out there that don't pay enough to support a family.

And I find it highly amusing that all you people are bitching about poor people, even though I doubt any of you have had their experiences. If you HAD, I'm sure you'd either mention it or be more sympathetic. But I don't think getting analysis from people who grew up in the suburbsis a good idea.

Hell no, I grew up in a 4500sqft house in the best part of town. My family was in the top 2% of the income bracket. On top of that I was able to sleepwalk to good grades. You're mistaking my post for compassion.

I'm not trying to help poor people out. I'm putting a solution down on paper so we can all feel good when we vote to cut funding to the so called underpriviledged.

Couldn't agree more.

basically it boils down to two stances. people are doomed to live due their circumstances and couldn't get out of the rut because of where they live (determinism) or that no matter what, people have it in themselves to rise above their surroundings and succeed (free-will). I subsrcibe to the latter because I have faith in the human race as a race that succeeds and will triumph over anything. Sorry you have little to no faith in the average Joe.

I'll tell you what, this is the most ignorant post I've ever heard of. Here are some thoughts about homelessness and impoverished people straight from a nurse.

*Causes of Homelessness*

Gentrification or elimination of low-income housing
Unemployment or underemployment
Substance abuse
Mental illness
Decreased gov?t assistance
Changes in labor market
Deinstitutionalization of mentally ill
Lack of social support (family, friends)

*Describing the Homeless*

40 % are families
50% - single men
14% - single women
25% - children

The FASTEST growing sector of homeless are FAMILIES

*Environmental and Other Perspectives*

Decreased earnings
Increased unemployment
Changes in labor force & market
Female-headed households
Inadequate education or job skills
Lack of anti-poverty programs

Dont tell me it's cuz they are lazy cuz thats BULL$HIT, I work in an urban hospital and I can tell you one of the biggest fear of my patients is whether Medicare/Medicaid will cover their hospital stay and how much money it's going to cost them. Most are not lazy AT ALL, you sir are an ignorant a$$

EDIT: Not to mention that minimum wage is 5.15 an hour and anyone who makes less than about 12 an hour could not possibly adequately support a family not even thinking about getting a GED or a college degree, heck even a family of four with 2 parents making 12 an hour thats still not much it's only 49,920 gross income cant afford much with that! The problem is more complex than your compassionless mind can comprehend

The OP sounds like one of the little high school bishes that would try to run down the poorer kids because they couldn't afford all the nicest clothes or drive the nicest cars. I grew up in relatively poor (widower father with 5 kids) family. There was no way for my father to give me the advantages that some rich kids had.

My father was an electrical engineer with 20+ years experience and worked his ASS off to put a roof over our heads and food on the table. He had a Bachelor's from the University of Denver and had a Masters from the University of Missouri. He was NOT lazy.

Fine example of the "compassionate conservatives" from the village idiots in this thread...ME ME ME ME ME THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND ME

I wonder if he unzips his pants at one of his local "minimum wage" business (McD, Wally World, etc.) and takes a leak on the employees while proclaiming "HA HA HA--I'm better than you sorry ass loser bitchis"

You'll still get over 40k even if your degree is in philosophy. That's far from poor.

So bottom line, you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

Maybe you need to climb off that golden throne of yours and join the "real world" (you know, with the "working pissants") but that's probably asking too much.

Funny, I'm giving them a way out of poverty and you're calling me the bad guy. I say people who let poor people hide behind their cheap excuses are the bad guys.
