How can anyone like cleartype? It's blurry and strains my eyes!

I just checked to see if I have cleartype on, and I don't. I turned it on, and I personally think it looks like blurry sh!t (Radeon 9800, NEC 1760V). Looks good on my Dell laptop though.

IMO do NOT use cleartype with the 1800FP. It does use the more uncommon BGR pixel configuration and doesn't look right.

You can use THIS LINK to turn cleartype on and configure it for BGR. It's a series of tests that dial in your cleartype settings. Then you can decide if you like it or not.

I always turn off cleartype on the PCs in the school's computer labs. They are Dell LCDs and PCs (donated by Michael Dell!).

If I don't turn on clear type, everything is pixelated and hard to read. Clear type smooths everything out so it's nice.

Some weirdness... In step 3 of the Cleartype tuning process on that webpage csaddict posted, if you select the text box in the lower right, the word "nostrud" changes to "nostrad"...

PS. Cleartype puts a lot of strain on my eyes. It feels as if they were constanly trying to focus in on the text without success.

I hate the cleartype. And note when you use MS's page, and don't like the results, and turn it off there-- it's still enabled. You have to go into the WinXP properties page and re-disable it. Just FYI.

I really depends on the LCD. I have a Thinkpad where cleartype looks phenomenal, but on my co-workers Toshiba it looks crappy. Just have to try it, and if it sucks turn it off.

Hey man, if you think it's no better than fine...more power to you. Just because I don't agree with you, your first instinct is to tell me to "fvck off"? I don't recall saying anything offensive to you, now did I? Are you 12?

The fact remains, from a purely technical standpoint, a current generation ATI Built 9x00 will have much better 2D than any of those older cards you mentioned. The GF2, V3, and especially the Diamond Stealth all had less than ideal 2D, and that is a generally accepted fact, whether you like it or not. It maybe that in your system, with your components, and most of all, your eyes, it looks no different, and that's cool. No need to get your panties in a bunch chief.

As for the cleartype with your Dell LCD, I think the explanation for the crappy cleartype performance has already been answered.

Right click on desktop, appearance, effects, select ClearType from the second menu.

As for me, it makes my eyes water within seconds on a CRT.

2D pretty much goes like this: those wonderful old Matrox cards -> ATI -> GeForce 4's and up -> dog crap smeared artfully on screen - > GeForce 3's and below -> diamond stealth.
