lol, no it's not. you aren't going to be forced to use the covered doctors and the current insurance companies will still be there for you to use. where did you pull this out of? lol.

I went to school in NY state in '99 and I was told it was NY state law for all college students to have health insurance. not sure if this is true.

Freshman year, I get the school offered insurance, cost 375 bucks. I end up going the the E-room to have a mole taken off my neck (it was bleeding and wouldn't stop) so the doc takes it of and cauterizes it, is pretty sure he knows what it is and shows me a picture in a great big book of skin deformities. He still sends it to the lab for testing.

E-room trip was 300 bucks, plus another 100 for lab testing. Turns out my insurance only covers 100 bucks per e-room visit. I was so pissed. It made me realize there was no point in me having this insurance. I would have had to go to the e-room 5 times to make my money back in one year.

$238? It's $800 per semester here. Luckily I'm still on my parents' insurance so I'm covered, but still... it could be worse.

I fucking hate unions. When I applied to Safeway, I asked if there was a chance I could opt out of their stupid ass union, they said no. So I said BAI!

Insurance and going to school should be mutually exclusive. I shouldn't be forced to get insurance because I want to go to school. If a school wants to give their students the option to get insurance that's one thing. To force them is another thing entirely.

It's called indoctrination. IE the School is trying to get you prepared for living in the Nanny States of America. This is a country where all your life choices are made by someone else.

The best thing you can do if you haven't spent any money there is to not go.

Obviously $238 is a completely trivial amount of money, but how can they force me to take insurance? I don't want their insurance. The package itself sucks and I can get better insurance from my work if I wanted (which I don't). The only way to get out of it is to show proof that I have alternate coverage.

Shit like this really pisses me off.

Many colleges and grad schools "force" you to buy a computer when you enroll also even if you own one. They roll it into tuition costs. And it's a lot more than $238.

It's needed because your space is more than just the payment you send in, esp in professional colleges.

You get sick and without insurance a lot of investment goes down the drain.

Also carrying insurance is the smart thing to do, only bottom dwellers don't and then cause everyone else to pay for their care. You are going to college to be a smarter person not the latter

So, you got screwed over for going to the emergency room for a non-emergency procedure? I don't think that necessarily means you had a bad insurance package. I mean, you expect to pay $375 for insurance that's going to cover emergency room visits for trivial procedures? That low cost for insurance assumes a relatively healthy, low risk population. True emergencies are few and far apart for those students. And, a higher deductible for ER visits helps prevent people from abusing ER services. If you had a true emergency - profuse bleeding and internal injuries after a car accident, the $1000 you might have paid out of pocket would seem like an incredible bargain compared to the total bill you racked up.

I went to an extremely conservative University, and they mandated that all students must have health insurance... So every semester I'd fork over my hard earned money for some cheap student plan the school offered, and they proceeded to never be sick.

Guess it was preparing me for Obama-care...

At one company I worked for, I had health insurance, but if you NEVER used it, they sent you a refund check for all the monthly amounts you paid for the year...that was a nice surprise!

Just because our country is too dumb not to mandate health insurance, don't expect university officials to be as dumb.

Perhaps something you've overlooked is that because everyone else had insurance, they were more apt to go to the university's medical center (or whatever they had) and get treated for whatever was bothering them. A doctor's note saying they had the flu & shouldn't be in class carries a lot more weight than simply calling the prof and saying "I can't be there for the test, I have the flu."

That's really going to take some getting used to for a Canadian.

I always had the option to opt out should I wanted to at my University. I was on my folks' insurance but I think it was upon my majority year that I went with the University plan since my parents no longer got a good discount due to my age.

Generalize much? I attended a Canadian university (UVic) a few years ago and I was able to opt-out of the university-provided coverage in favour of my parent's coverage.

This was college...you don't want to go to class, you just don't go to class...no one is taking roll or anything...

I just hated how you had to pay money for insurance, when in reality it would have been cheaper for me to pay out of pocket if I got ill, rather than take a gamble with insurance on the off chance that something catastrophic might happen. In which case, under the University's health plan I would have to pay much of the care, that I would be bankrupt anyway!

Really? We have a state law that all universities have to take roll. You can miss 6 MWF or 4 TH classes. After that your maximum letter grade for the class drops by one letter per missed day.

What state is that? Most of the classes I've taken in MN only take attendance in discussion sections and the amount you can miss varies by instructor. Why are Tuesday and Thursday different?

That's retarded. Who the heck cares if someone doesn't show up every day if they are able to do all the work assigned? School is about learning, not socializing. (Though, socializing in college is very fun.)

Your an adult now, grow the fuck up and be responsible. Nobody should have to pay for your ass when you roll into the ER with life threatening injuries.

Insurance isnt doing anyone any good until we need it, you aint special.

No shit. I missed the whole semester of a genetics class because I refused to sit through a lecture that was dumbed down so the idiots could understand. I was there for the tests. I made the second highest overall grade in the class. Why should I have gone to that class?

My school does the same thing and it pissed me off, especially since it is technically a state school.

I imagine is has to do with the university health center not wanting to have to deal with anyone that is not insured.

Most doctor's offices don't want to deal with the uninsured. After all, they want to get paid. Hence the ER overcrowding that conservatives believe is ideal.

I already pay heath center fees, why should I also need insurance? Do they want paid twice?

Why? Because think of all the cheesy pickup lines you could have used in that class, that's why.
