They did at mine, but that was more of a fraternity thing... not really health insurance-related.

Really? We have a state law that all universities have to take roll. You can miss 6 MWF or 4 TH classes. After that your maximum letter grade for the class drops by one letter per missed day.

what crap.

mine is a crapshoot depending on the instructor. some classes i barely attend, some i have to be there every day or theyll drop me after so many days, nevermind how my grades are or whether or not my work is in on time (theyre good, it is)

I am also in Canada and .....

I was forced to pay initially for health+dental but you can opt out later.
So it was tacked onto my tuition at first and I opted out a week later after paying it and got a cheque in the mail and never paid insurance for future terms (since I had already opt'd out)

To play devil's advocate here, the greatest chance for epidemics to take place is in areas where the population is highly concentrated. Those individuals without insurance are far more likely to not seek medical help until the problem is in crisis mode. You put those two things together and you have a recipe for disaster.

A university is there to make money. When headlines read "10 Dead, Hundreds Sickened, School in Quarantine" their ability to make money is severely hampered for the foreseeable future.

Maybe they're doing it as a preventative measure to prevent the spread of disease..

like this: CSU Student May Have H1N1 Virus

If a viral outbreak occurs on campus, they can distribute innoculations without worrying that some students cant afford it...

That's retarded. Who the heck cares if someone doesn't show up every day if they are able to do all the work assigned? School is about learning, not socializing. (Though, socializing in college is very fun.)

actually most of school esp prior to college is socialization and learning to work as a team.

A number of my classes had 10-20% of your grade was based on class participation.

On test days sometimes a medical excuse might allow a retake vs the 'ol flat tire excuse.

What state is that? Most of the classes I've taken in MN only take attendance in discussion sections and the amount you can miss varies by instructor. Why are Tuesday and Thursday different?

Mississippi. Note that the allowed number of misses are essentially two weeks worth of classes. As for the reasons, I'm assuming it has something to do with discouraging people from from "attending" college and then dropping out. I don't know.

are you sure there wasn't an opt out option...i've seen plenty of these insurance offers and they all have given you a chance to opt out even if it wasn't obvious

You go to the test, no matter how sick you are...unless you are giving birth or having open heart surgery...then I'm sure the Dr. will jot down something for you...in case you survive...

Op, you wouldn't happen to be going to the UofM, would you?

Edit: Your profile says you're from Winnipeg, hah! Same here. UMSU is a big pile of shit, people. Its probably the same anywhere but the fees are always increasing and we always seem to be getting less in return.

This is pretty standard practice. Also, what kind of jackass that can easily afford medical insurance chooses NOT to have any? That's, quite frankly, idiotic. (Well, that's mostly applicable to US residents, while less idiotic for Canadians, I still don't see why you wouldn't get it.)

I went to an extremely conservative University, and they mandated that all students must have health insurance... So every semester I'd fork over my hard earned money for some cheap student plan the school offered, and they proceeded to never be sick.

Perhaps something you've overlooked is that because everyone else had insurance, they were more apt to go to the university's medical center (or whatever they had) and get treated for whatever was bothering them. A doctor's note saying they had the flu & shouldn't be in class carries a lot more weight than simply calling the prof and saying "I can't be there for the test, I have the flu."

This was college...you don't want to go to class, you just don't go to class...no one is taking roll or anything...

I just hated how you had to pay money for insurance, when in reality it would have been cheaper for me to pay out of pocket if I got ill, rather than take a gamble with insurance on the off chance that something catastrophic might happen. In which case, under the University's health plan I would have to pay much of the care, that I would be bankrupt anyway!

I think if you read my entire reply, you'd realize that I was implying that a student could miss a test. Seriously, especially with H1N1 going around this year, if you're sick - stay the hell away from other students. That's hard to do when you feel absolutely obligated to go to classes. But, if you genuinely have something contagious & have to miss class, that medical excuse is more likely to buy you a little time to catch up on work. And, going to the doctor in the first place is something people without insurance are less apt to do.

As far as the "want to go to class" - I challenged myself with the courses I took at college. Missing a class often left me lost. It didn't matter if I wanted to go to class or not - I wanted to do well. I didn't take cake courses that you could skip out of and still get an A.
