Obviously $238 is a completely trivial amount of money, but how can they force me to take insurance? I don't want their insurance. The package itself sucks and I can get better insurance from my work if I wanted (which I don't). The only way to get out of it is to show proof that I have alternate coverage.

Shit like this really pisses me off.

Welcome to your first taste of ObamaCare.

Keep your P&N in P&N, FFS.
I also don't think he'll be covered under US health care since he's CANADIAN. I hope you know you're one of those people who should not breed that you mention in your sig.

The practice of requiring all students to have health insurance has been around way before the Obama administration.

Maybe it's just you, but in my situation the insurance packages offered to me at both undergrad and grand were much better than what I had by myself. It was in fact cheaper too.

My suggestion is to just get it through the university. They still use somebody else as the underwriter so you're still able to visit your old doctor (most likely) or be treated at the ER when you're away. Makes your life easier when you're on campus.

I'd also like to point out, it's not being forced on me by the university. It's being forced on me by the Students Union and then somehow tacked on to my university fee. Somehow I was also forced into being part of a union I have no interest in being a part of...

It's to make sure that students won't be inadequately covered in the case of any emergency.

You can choose to decline the coverage by showing them other existing extended medical cards at your student union office.

Are you stupid? It hasn't nothing to do with ObamaCare. You should ask your school for a refund.

Well if it makes so much sense to have every student covered by medical insurance why not apply that same thinking to the whole country? I think its a scam just so all the students pay for the admin healthcare. I bet the staff doesn't pay for their healthcare.

I've never heard of it being required. At the schools I went to, you could hold your own plan elsewhere - you just couldn't be uninsured.

When I had a TA position, the insurance was provided as a benefit at no cost to us...we still weren't banned from having other coverage.

What hole did you pull that idea out of? Typically most university staff have similar benefits to other state employees.

I don't fucking understand why reading comprehension is so difficult. The OP basically spun the policy and wrote about it in such a way as to make it seem like the university was forcing him to buy their insurance. THEY'RE NOT. He's free to go get coverage elsewhere, as he stated. What's happening here is that he's required to have insurance, ANY insurance, so that he can attend classes at a university HE CHOSE. It's not like he was conscripted, or required to attend this university. You don't like the policy? Don't fucking go there.

There are plenty of situations where people have to satisfy certain requirements before they can do something. For example, driving. Try registering a vehicle without insurance. See where that lands you. Oh shit, it must be Obama's new transportation policy. For fuck's sake...

/end rant

Exactly. It's the university's decisions whether or not they would like to require health insurance be held by their student body. If that's what they choose, then it's up to the potential students to decide if they would like to attend a college that has such requirements. Don't like the requirement, don't go to the school.

Typically, universities don't arbitrarily setup requirements such as these. As other posters have said, having health insurance likely increases the average number of class sessions you're able to attend, especially when you have 20+ young adults sitting in the same room(s) together for hours on end. Beyond that, and as has also been said, the health center may simply not want to deal with uninsured individuals.

As for faculty rates--you'd probably be surprised. At most colleges I've seen, the faculty rates for pretty much everything (gym membership, parking passes, health insurance, etc.) are higher than are the rates for students.

Good gravy... Both of my sisters were required to have some kind of health coverage. Sure as shit, I'm required to have some kind of health coverage at my school.

Obama must be gooooooood. He's been forcing health insurance on people since he was 20 some years old!

I know it's P&N but I just couldn't let that one go.

This.

My employer is the same way. I have to have health insurance. They don't care how.

What's the problem? Being uninsured is horribly irresponsible and you have benefits available. Consider yourself lucky that you can even get insurance.

I imagine is has to do with the university health center not wanting to have to deal with anyone that is not insured.

Most doctor's offices don't want to deal with the uninsured. After all, they want to get paid. Hence the ER overcrowding that conservatives believe is ideal.

get used to it because eventually you are going to be forced to accept government healthcare.

Anyway, college kids are prone to getting hurt and/or sick. The college is protecting itself and the rest of the population there by doing this. That's dirt cheap for insurance, so of course it's not great coverage, but it covers basic stuff. Quit whining that they want you to be healthy and not a typhoid mary in their dorms and join reality.

I can fill out a health waiver if I can prove that I have insurance that equals or betters the university's insurance.

I've been doing so for the last 2 years. Wish I had done it for all the years.
