How can I get my dogs to stop digging in the yard?

Thsi is driving me crazy, my backyard is beginning to resemble the Puerto Rican island of Vieques. It is getting really bad. The newest hole is close to the pool, so all of the dirt they dig up goes right in the pool.

Can I stop this without physically disabling them? Maybe some of those leather paw covers that protect dogs feet from rocks and stuff?

Good luck. If you find a way let me know. I have two Boxers and a Red Bone my excellent compatriot Hound and my back yard looks like no mans land from a WWI battlefield. As soon as the my excellent compatriot hound grows up (he's only 3 mos.) they should all settle down and I will fully sod the yard, this should stop them. Most dogs don't dig thru the grass but don't quote me on that. I wiil make a sand box in the corner of the yard for them to play in and hopefully this will satisfy them. Dogs usually dig to get cooler so a sandbox in the shade might be the way to go.

they have electrified fences designed for that (very mild), and smell-based repellents

When my dog got "castrated" it mellowed out quite a bit. It used to take whatever it could find on the floor, and start to spin like a maniac and then would let go and the thing in it's mouth would get hucked against a wall or something. It would do it for hours at a time. Never does that anymore, pretty much sleeps all day now, lol.

Cut their legs off. Or maybe just their hind legs, and get one of those little doggie wheelchairs. They wont do much digging after that.

put something the dogs don't like in a fresh hole, then rub their faces in it.

i think i remember my dad doing this
so i don't know if he was just crazy, or if it is for real.

well this is what i did for my grandparents' and my sister's dogs. so it might work for you. your dog is prolly digging a hole to get cool. the mud/soil/earth is cooler under the surface. sounds crazy i know. put some of the "doggy pOOp" in the hole that they dug. put doggy face in hole. dogs don't like to play in thier "stuff". you may have to repeat this a few times. but at the same time you need to provide someplace cool for them to hang out. ie..a wash tub full of water or the shade of some big trees or a dog house that is in the shade. dog house int he sun is nothing but an oven. this process usually works. the dog prosists with dugging...some red pepper in the hole might not be a bad idea. not too much tho...could make dog go into a sneezing spell...tis funny to watch but not really good for the dog.

stick some habeneros in a blender. Put on a face mask of some sort, trust me, its frickin mace. Mix that habenero with some water etc in a sprayer. Your dogs wont want anything to do with that grass. I've used this to keep cats out of flower beds (although used coffee grounds seem to work best for that) and I bet it might work with your dogs.
