How can i get windows to survive a Mobo upgrade?

Hey i'm not sure if this is the right place, but if it isn't just move it plz mods ! (maybe should be in software/OS but i need response kise fast)

Well anyway i'm upgrading from a AMD751 Giga-Byte chipset to an Asus A7N8X. All the rest of the hardware will be staying the same (cept ram). Soo i heard there is a way that you can kinda prep WindowsXP to help sruvive the upgrade.

So what do i need to do to help it survive.

just rebuild your system, if it wont boot if its XP boot from cd and choose the REPAIR option (not the recover console)

and if its 9X just re run set.exe from your cabs from dos, it will recopy windows files... do both of those all the time at the shop here

If you are using Windows XP, boot into safe mode, log in as administrator, go to control panel, system, Hardware, Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATPI Controllers, Double Click on the AMD IDE Controller (not primary or secondary controller)
Driver Tab, Update Driver button, Install from a list or Specific Location next, Do not search I will sepcify, Select Standard ATA Controller, Next and then Finish. One done Turn the machine off and install new hardware. It should boot up straight into windows. Ive done this several times personally, that should get you through. Windows XP is not quite as picky as 9x was when changing motherboards on it.

Although I still recomment a fresh format for new motherboard

Im with Dah on that... customers never wana loose software usually cuz its pirated lol... but a reload form scratch is always best

Read this article from the AnandTech FAQ's.

Read the paragraph "Misc. Notes: " about 3/4 of the way down. I have used this method numerous times with a 100% success rate.

hey thanks for the replies, the OS is WinXP Pro i guess i shuda specified better.

Anyway, the WinXP repair method seems to be the easier since i already took out the mobo and installed the new one. Now all i gotta do is plug everytying in a tidy thw wires and i'll be ready to go. Dahaks method seems more thorough, but i already did the upgrade like 65% and i'm not turning back.
