How can I redirect audio from XP to Linux?

I have an XP SP2 machine that I would like to use as a server.
The client I will be using runs Redhat 4.

I don't want the screen to be visible on the server. In other words, I don't want people who have access to the monitor attached to the server to see what I am doing.
I would like to hear audio from the client speakers sourced by the server.

I have tried rdesktop. Everything works fine. Except that I cannot get any sound.

I tried vnc also. I was not able to get sound from that either. But, I did not spend as much time on it since I could not blank the server screen.

I cannot install any software I like on the Linux machine. However, I have more freedom on installing software on the XP.

What are my options?

Thanks

VLC

Install on the XP machine, create a playlist, and run the Wizard to stream to the network. You can use VLC on the linux machine if you want, or just about any other audio client that supports streaming audio.

I am sorry about my unclear description of what I need.

I need all audio to be redirected; not just music from a specific application.
I even need to hear all Windows notification beeps.

The Linux Terminal Server Client (not just rdesktop, Terminal Server Client is a separate application) supports audio over the RDP connection.

rdesktop supports sound redirection.

-r sound:[local|off|remote]
Redirects sound generated on the server to the client. "remote" only has any effect when you connect to the console with the -0
option. (Requires Windows XP or newer).

I have set it to -r sound:local.
But, it does not work.

When I check audio properties on the XP server, I get Microsoft RDP Audio Driver under the Sound playback Default device.
The pull down manu has nothing else under it. This is when checking it through rdesktop.
When I check the same form sitting at the server, I get many drivers for different sound devices but not RDP.

When I play a sound from the list of Program events on the "Sounds" tab of "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" through rddesktop, I get this error:
Windows cannot play the %SystemRoot%\media\Windows XP Error.wav file. It may be damaged or may not be a valid sound file.
When I do the same sitting at the server, I get no error.

I don't have a Windows box handy to try it right now, but I'll give it a try when I get back to work in a bit.

I've seen cases where the VIDEO driver on the "server" PC isn't cooperative and RDP won't function. You might try different audio drivers on the Windows machine. Or pop in a different sound card.

Obviously, remote sound is SUPPOSED to work in RDP (at least Windows-to-Windows), and, normally, does.

I tried a Vista client and sound redirection works fine.
I can hear the sound originating from the XP server from the speakers on the Vista client.

Something must be wrong with the way I am running rdesktop on Linux.

Any suggestions?

The only Windows machine with sound on it is a VM locally and doing the sound redirection didn't work with it, but I'm not sure if it's because it's a local VM or not.

I would still like to resolve this. So, please let me know if you have any other suggestions.

But, I have another question about an alternative.

If I run a virtual box on Linux and install Vista in it, can I run Vista in a window or does it have to take the entire screen?

Can Vista use the on-board sound driver? Can Vista, as a guest ,make sound while Linux, as the host OS, is also using the same sound card?

The guest will see a virtualized sound driver, for example I have XP in VMware here and it reports an ES1371 when there's no PCI sound cards and the onboard is Intel.

1- If the Vista guest OS encounters an error and beeps, can the user hear the beep or not?

2- What happens if the guest OS sends something to the speaker and at the same time the host OS sends something else to the speaker? What will be heard from the speaker?

If the sound card is installed and connected, yes it'll beep just like normal.

The same thing that happens when any 2 apps send sound at the same time.

When I remotely log into XP from Linux (rdesktop) and check "Sounds and Audio Devices properties", under the "Audio" tab, I see "Microsoft RDP Audio Driver" under "Sound Playback".

If I click on "Advanced", I get this error message:
DirectSound settings not available.

Is this why I cannot get sound redirected to the Linux client?
