I have around 20 gigs of files on my old computer that I want to transfer to my new one, and the only way I can do it is with Ethernet cable. I need a simple way to send the files between computers, and the networking crap on windows hasn't been working. Suggestions? I'm a n00b when it comes to networks.

Whenever I try sending files via ethernet they get corrupted on the way for some reason. Instead if you're getting a new HD with your new rig maybe you could hook them both up and use something like Norton Ghost to transfer the files?

I suggest placing both HD's in the same computer and transfering between the drives.

If your Os is Win XP try using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard that comes with XP.

There are solutions that work over USB. I have seen the USB connect cables at CompUsa and Microcenter. They are usually $20 and will come with software that shows all the drives on both systems so you can just copy them. The one I got at CompUsa works fine and is an easy way to move the files if you don't have a network.

That, or a crossover cable between the two computers (just search for it; there's two primary kinds of network cables - straight through and crossover), and maybe assign each PC a static IP address. They should be able to talk to each other then.

you can even use a male to male parallel cable (used to carry this in my toolkit back in the day), it's slower then ass, but it works.

options:

a) parallel cable
b) parallel zip drive
c) parallel cd-rw (ooo the memories!)
c) usb cable
d) usb hard drive
e) usb flash drive
f) usb cd-rw
g) floppy drive
h) move hd in system #1 to system #2
i) move hd in system #2 to system #1
j) use crossover ethernet cable
k) use straigth ethernet cables to hub or switch
l) email the files to yourself
m) upload them to a web server

OMG!! there are only 10 other options that don't involve ethernet cable??.. (sorry just think this question would only be asked by someone who was to lazy to use their brain)

I'm always amused when people ask data transfer questions, as there are SO many options.

Buy a DVD writer. 5 DVDz outta do it, and that's not bad. You can get a DVD writer for WELL under $100...and the media....go to www.meritline.com and get an AWESOME deal on blanks. Easiest way to go in my opinion.

the simplest way without buying anything is make sure you have 20gig of free space on the new HD, then:

1) take out the new HD
2) change jumper to "slave"
3) hook new HD on old computer
4) drag and drop files in windows

I agree this would be the fastest and cheapest way.

A null modem cable on your serial port can be a cheap way, i picked one up for $6 not to long ago.

I see that no one has mentyioned the quick and easy transfer of files via the "flash memory sneaker net." (FMSN)

I do that all the time even WITH a working LAN. It is often faster and more secure. Just pop in a good sized flash memory device into a USB port - and copy the files you want to it - then take that to the next computer and copy from it. Piece of cake. Done before you ever get a burned CD out of the tray.

I think the FMSN would fall under the "usb hard drive" category as a usb flash drive is essentially, for all intents and purposes, a small hard drive.
