Catholics are taught to "turn the other cheek" not "attack a country *pre-emptively*"

How can YOU, as a Catholic, vote for that?

Any of you who have lived a majority of your life in the Hispanic community know how religious they claim to be with the pictures of the Virgin Mary painted on walls or tattooed on backs, etc.; the shrines that they set up in their houses with candles and pictures of saints and the many religious medallions they carry.

Catholic doctrine is very strongly opposed to abortion and it is one of the greatest sins and tragedies of humanity. Of course it is a fact that most democrats are for abortion (you can spin it anyway you like, pro-choice, woman's right to choose, health of the mother, etc. but it all boils down to being pro-abortion) and most republicans against. My question is how can you claim to be so religious and pray everyday yet support and vote for a democratric candidate who supports abortion which goes against Catholic teachings? I ask my many Hispanic friends why they (the Hispanic community) as a whole overwhemingly vote democratic yet claim to be so religious and they have no answer. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

I have a counter question:

How can you claim yourself a christian (protestant or catholic) and be republican? The main focus of the republican party is to benefit the rich while screwing the poor (abortion is only a side issue not the main focus of the republican party). By cutting massive taxes the rich is able to save hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per year by one individual. As a result we lose such things as welfare, health care, food stamps, among other things to help the poor to live, quality education etc. To put it in simpler terms the rich rather watch the poor suffer and die then to help them.

Lets review our theology now shall we...? Christ himself was born in a relatively poor family. His followers all at the time were poor and classless in the Roman society at the time. SOme were slaves, other homeless amongst just hard working poor people. Christ was such an inspiration and became such a big religious figure by helping the poor and ease their sufferings. For about 3 centuries Christianity was a religion for the poor because the way christ have touched peoples heart from caring about every1 (not just the rich).

I see a real resemblence to the real teachings of Christ to the democratic party because their humane associations with every1(which includes the poor), rather in selfish context like the republicans. Its sad that priests and ministers of today read the bible and take the literal meanings coming out of the book rather than understanding the good teachings of Christ. Do you think if Christ was here today he will tell you to screw the poor to let the rich live more prosperously?

So explain to me how you can be a true believer of Christ and not vote for the democratic party?!

I don't know how to "vote Democrat".

I may vote "Democratic". I may even vote for a Democrat.

As a Catholic, I cannot vote for a war monger like W.

Come now. While Kerry may be an imperfect Christian, at least he's a Christian. That's more than we can say about George Bush, an admitted heretic.
