i think you mean autoexec.bat + config.sys and how you had to edit that manually, and if you goof'd you had to do all the lines all over again..

oh crap... did i just reveal how old i am...
system.ini was the basic configuration file for Windows. It was later replaced by the registry.

At least you didn't talk about vi edit
When I log into my Xenix system with my 110 baud teletype, both vi
*and* Emacs are just too damn slow. They print useless messages like,
'C-h for help' and '"foo" File is read only'. So I use the editor
that doesn't waste my VALUABLE time.

Ed, man! !man ed

ED(1) UNIX Programmer's Manual ED(1)

NAME
ed - text editor

SYNOPSIS
ed [ - ] [ -x ] [ name ]
DESCRIPTION
Ed is the standard text editor.
---

Computer Scientists love ed, not just because it comes first
alphabetically, but because it's the standard. Everyone else loves ed
because it's ED!

"Ed is the standard text editor."

And ed doesn't waste space on my Timex Sinclair. Just look:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 24 Oct 29 1929 /bin/ed
-rwxr-xr-t 4 root 1310720 Jan 1 1970 /usr/ucb/vi
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 5.89824e37 Oct 22 1990 /usr/bin/emacs

Of course, on the system *I* administrate, vi is symlinked to ed.
Emacs has been replaced by a shell script which 1) Generates a syslog
message at level LOG_EMERG; 2) reduces the user's disk quota by 100K;
and 3) RUNS ED!!!!!!

"Ed is the standard text editor."

Let's look at a typical novice's session with the mighty ed:

golem> ed

?
help
?
?
?
quit
?
exit
?
bye
?
hello?
?
eat flaming death
?
^C
?
^C
?
^D
?

---
Note the consistent user interface and error reportage. Ed is
generous enough to flag errors, yet prudent enough not to overwhelm
the novice with verbosity.

"Ed is the standard text editor."

Ed, the greatest WYGIWYG editor of all.

ED IS THE TRUE PATH TO NIRVANA! ED HAS BEEN THE CHOICE OF EDUCATED
AND IGNORANT ALIKE FOR CENTURIES! ED WILL NOT CORRUPT YOUR PRECIOUS
BODILY FLUIDS!! ED IS THE STANDARD TEXT EDITOR! ED MAKES THE SUN
SHINE AND THE BIRDS SING AND THE GRASS GREEN!!

When I use an editor, I don't want eight extra KILOBYTES of worthless
help screens and cursor positioning code! I just want an EDitor!!
Not a "viitor". Not a "emacsitor". Those aren't even WORDS!!!! ED!
ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!!

TEXT EDITOR.

When IBM, in its ever-present omnipotence, needed to base their
"edlin" on a UNIX standard, did they mimic vi? No. Emacs? Surely
you jest. They chose the most karmic editor of all. The standard.

Ed is for those who can *remember* what they are working on. If you
are an idiot, you should use Emacs. If you are an Emacs, you should
not be vi. If you use ED, you are on THE PATH TO REDEMPTION. THE
SO-CALLED "VISUAL" EDITORS HAVE BEEN PLACED HERE BY ED TO TEMPT THE
FAITHLESS. DO NOT GIVE IN!!! THE MIGHTY ED HAS SPOKEN!!!

Hate to tell you. #karen isn't a boomer. She's typically a 40-something. I know plenty of tech-savvy boomers.

So, you're saying that I'm the archaic one? Could be.

Edit: And possibly, the act of #Karen across the USA, calling for the manager, is actually a societal act of defiance against automation, and a means to ensure job security for their fellow Boomer managers?

And speaking of 'vi' and 'emacs' I find it amusing that the SGI I played on in college in the very early 1990's cost more than the home I am living in today, which ain't small. And yet my smartphone probably had more umph now.

....someone that can't figure out how to use a K-cup brewer, can't figure out a VCR, DVD player, PC, Windows Updates, etc., FUNCTION IN SOCIETY? WHERE DO THESE STUPID PEOPLE COME FROM? I SEE THEM EVERYWHERE.

Edit: It must be #Karen, WHERE'S THE MANAGER, I WANT TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER, BECAUSE I'M TOO STUPID TO GO TO YOUR STORE'S WEB SITE AND LOOK UP PRODUCT PRICES AND AVAILABILITY MYSELF!

Thank God these non-technologically-inclined Boomers are going to die off soon. ( @BoomerD excepted, you know how to use a PC, otherwise you wouldn't even be on this forum.)
its just a lazy thing, of course they could figure it out if they wanted to. its like when i fix my friends computer and i asked "how come you dont just watch what im doing here so you can do it yourself next time" he replied "its ok i will just call you to fix it again if it messed up" /me frustrated but just traded work if ever needed to do it again..

I'm assuming you're talking about just, like, normal people and not people whose brains are so blown out on drugs and alcohol that they can barely form a coherent sentence or sign their name.

Most people just DGAF about computers, and only learn (by rote process-oriented learning which breaks every time a UI changes) the bare minimum to do what they need to do. They have... *GASP* OTHER HOBBIES.

Most of the year, you will find them outside engaging in recreation behavior, usually with a small group of people called a "family" - particular care is paid to the behavior and training of a sort of small human called a "child."

That's crazy! In less "tolerant" countries, they'd probably lock people like that up.

That's because everyone you know is like 90 years old and just sits around watching Matlock and Murder She Wrote.

theres literally thousands of sci-fi novels that pontificate on what would happen if our lives became so easy we didnt even know what was going on around us. that we'd be dead meat if "The Grid" went down and nobody knew how to do anything for themselves.
it used to be fantasy. now I think those authors were sending us warnings.
Fok. If the electricity goes off and my phones don't work it's not the end of the world for me.

I wrote a poem about this around 40 years ago, it's title is "Everything's Off." I'm ready for the apocalypse.

I decided over 30 years ago, after quite a bit of experience here and there, doing umpteen jobs of all kinds and seeing a ton of situations, that "incompetence is everywhere." I found that all the situations I found myself in, there were incompetent people around me. I explained this to my boss one day. It was a crap job with no future, I was a temp, but I would have liked to be permanently hired there just so I could have a dependable income, paltry as it was. My boss's reaction was "that should make you feel good because you are more competent than them." Not the reaction I wanted and I said no more.

Don't have expectations and you are less apt to be disappointed.

BTW, I was damned good at what I did there and I liked some of the people I was working with. It was a civil service type job for the county investigating suspect claims for welfare. Kind of detective work. Didn't pay much, but I liked it anyway. Being temporary, it too was soon over. That was life for me then.

Why not? I do all the time...until my body reminds me..."you're too fucking old to be doing that stuff!"
I try to listen to my body, but I don't like to interpret it as saying that! I have gotten over a lot of things, some things it didn't seem like I was EVER going to get over!

Well, that's more or less still the same. After all the time I've spent working with massive corporations I've come away being surprised that anything works at all.
