About a year ago, heading to work at 2am, I was on a flyover ramp from one interstate to another and spilled my coffee mug as I went around the curve too fast. Flipped it over to the other side of the truck. I quickly pull over to the right side of the ramp. I am now about 100 ft above the other roadway. I pull on my passenger door handle and it is locked which causes my hand to slip and my body to stumble backwards, Right into a 3 foot high retaining wall which is right at ass level. I caught myself just in time before I tumbled over the wall, but just barely. Imagine the police report would have said suicide for sure.

Peace

I've probably had a lot of close calls. When you look back at them all I'm a pretty lucky person I guess.

I've almost been shot a few times, almost blown up, ran over, traffic accidents , carbon monoxide, appendix burst, several close calls with trees falling etc.

Well there's a new dawn each day so your username name might still hold.

My closest call was sitting at a light entering an address into the GPS. I though the light changed and started pulling into the intersection. Got hit by a semi, luckily I saw him coming and stopped so he hit the engine and not the passenger compartment. No injuries, 6K to fix the Escape.

When I was about 12 years old I was on my Grandparents' farm in Thunder Bay, sometime in the Winter (Winter in Thunder Bay is bloody cold, or at least it was this year). Was out walking with the dog and we ended up going down near the creek, which looked stable (even threw some rocks on it to see if it was thick enough to walk on), so we walked out on it and I slid around on it for a while.

Sure enough, after a few minutes of shenanigans *crack* the ice opened up below me and down I plunged. I could not get out as my clothes were super heavy and wet, plus I could not get a handhold on the ice above. Fortunately, Pasha was a very smart German Shepherd and she started barking like crazy, ran back to the house and got my Jaja (Grandpa) who was able to get me out using a big stick and a rope. Took forever for me to warm up that day from what I remember; lots of hot cocoa and whatever food I wanted. :awe:

Definitely the closest I have felt to death.

Shens. You just took the script from an epiisode of Lassie that you saw as a kid.

Lol yeah, it does sound like a Lassie story, but I still have half-numb big toes from the incident. Can stab them with a knife and I won't feel it.

But yeah, a dog saved my life.

When I was 10 I was on a school field trip and the hotel we were staying at had a pool. The pool had a high dive and dumb me jumped off it not knowing how to swim. Lucky an older kid who was 14 saved my by pushing me to the edge of the pool. I sucked up a lot of water that day.

None, for as many power outlets and light fixtures I have changed without turning off a breaker.

It's only 110v, so not too bad.

fell 10 feet headfirst onto concrete as a kid. my dad almost caught me, apparently. but didnt quite.

fell out of a second story window, as a kid.

(both of these, i was too young to remember.)

had several near misses while driving, but who hasn't.

almost got run over by a car, while i was bicycling. the car (minivan) took off, didn't get a plate. (she actually hit just a little behind center on my bike. pinned my leg against the bike, and pushed the rear tire around till it cleared. had I been 3 feet behind where i was, i would have been in worse shape.)

a few other incidents, but i can't remember right now.

I took a 60 ft whipper while climbing, it was a clean fall but I missed a few ledges on the way down. Blew two pieces of protection, which is why it was so big. I wasn't too remote, probably a 25 minute helicopter flight out, so maybe not Darwin scale.

I was out in the backcountry skiing, on a "green light" day (stable avalanche conditions). There was a warning on southern aspects if the sun came out. Sure enough, we found an unstable pocket, 5ft deep and about 40 feet wide hard slab. That in itself isn't too bad, except the terrain I was above. Lucky, I had speed and (I'd like to think) some wits about me and I was able to cut the slope at a roughly 45 degree angle and take a slightly different line. Had I been caught in the slide I would have been carried over a 100+ cliff!

The scariest thing I can think of happening to me is not me almost dying but me almost hitting people who run out into traffic for some stupid reason. Narrowly missing somebody at 60MPH is fucking scary.

even if it hit you, doubtful it would have done damage.

worst possible thing is if it hit your eye. that would have done damage.

but...that's why you wear eye protection!

that's a whole lot of speculation there Lou.

I don't think its ever safe to get hit with a bullet. A .22 moves damn fast and will bounce around a ton. Shotgun? Pretty sure you'd be right. A rifle is a different story though.

Hmm, stupid maneuvering and road rage on the highway lost control going 75, managed to regain it without spinning (thanks awd+new tires).

The other one I can think of is running across this same highway (turnpike in south fl) near a less busy area and completely unlit area around 11pm. Car I was in broke down and someone came to pick us up in the other direction. So the guys say go! I run across the highway in pitch dark looking into oncoming traffic running as fast as I can. It get's even more stupid though, I failed to realize was the center median/block thing about knee level that I ran into as fast as I could run, doing a somersault over it and busting my knee caps. I managed to pick myself off the middle of the highway and continue limping/running to the other side before traffic came in.

Several things could have gone wrong there.

I laughed. With you, not at you.

Almost got crushed by my parents deck about 10 years ago. I was learning to drive a stick in my first car. An '89 Dodge colt. Got the clutch and the brake confused went shooting off down the hill on the back on of the driveway which happens to be parallel to the supports for our deck. Took out all the supports with the car and ended up crashing into a pile of lumber. If I hadn't the foresight to gun it I wouldn't have cleared the deck, and it was definitely bigger and heavier than my car.

Probably have a bunch, but the only I can recall right now. I use to live about a block away from the railroad tracks, if me and my friends were playing outside my house and heard the train whistle we'd run and try to beat the train across the tracks. The train was always a good 25 feet back, a few times times maybe half that. Once, and the last time I did it. I was the last to leap across the track, and as I did I felt the front of the train touch my back foot. It looked to be going about full speed. If the train touching my shoe wasn't bad enough, the whistle deafened me for a minute or so. We had done this hundreds of times, but that was the only close call though. My friends continued to play this game, but that was my last go at it. Crazy how 5 of us did this hundreds of times and nobody ever died or even got hurt.

it's not speculation. it's a rebound on a .22 shot. at firing, it's barely supersonic.

i've been hit with rebounds on much heavier bullets. they can hurt, but they don't penetrate. if it were an actual rifle cartridge, i wouldn't be saying this. but a .22, then it's not really a big deal. (besides, the rifle round probably wouldn't have issues penetrating whatever he was shooting, and therefore wouldn't have bounced back.)
