I'm not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, only that it is what has happened.

For members of the affected group, to show solidarity via shared symbolism is a natural response to a traumatic event.
Well said. My flag flying is a kind of family tradition borne of my father's very real patriotism.

After 9/11 everyone had one..on the front of the house, on a flag pole, in gardens, on the mailbox, on their car antenna..everywhere you looked you saw a flag.
Everyone was patriotic and loved America.

Especially when the Iraq war started everyone felt the need to show how patriotic they were and everyone bought new and bigger flags to fly.

I was, and still am against the war, but I still displayed my flag.

Then I really noticed the last couple of years that there arent nearly as many flags flying as there used to be.

Now with the nice weather and the Memorial Day weekend here I still dont see any flags.

I hope that changes this weekend.

Because at the time of 9/11 it was the cool thing to do at the time. Everyone was doing it.. including the Jones's, so everyone had to do it, to fit in.

I'm sure there was alot of pressure on some people also. You didn't want to be labeled as "un-patriotic".
What did Bush say, "you're either with us.. or against us"..
So, you flew the flag.. or you were a terrorist

Him and me save our old ratty flags throughout the years and have a proper burning ceremony on occasions, this weekend being one since they're driving over.

13. When the flag is displayed on a car, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.

So much for those window flags

Not to mention all of the people who flew their flags unilluminated at night.

Because the post 9/11 hysteria is finally winding down? Even before that, I never got the Americans' obsession with their flag.

"The Code does not say what "properly illuminated" means. The American Legion says illuminated is to be defined as "having a light source sufficient to illuminate the flag so it is recognizable as such by the casual observer." It must also be observed that nation wide millions of flags are placed on graves and monuments where there is no illumination. Arlington puts out a couple hundred thousand on memorial day. They do not take them in at night."

Before 9/11, I think American patriotism was more or less non-existent except in the south or during a war. We still have a war going on, but we're tired of it now so patriotism has dropped in areas outside of the south.

Kind of ironic that the part of the country that tried to start their own country is the most patriotic.

Or perhaps I am wrong that it is a southern thing, maybe it's a red state thing?

I don't think you are wrong. About 35% of the active duty military comes from the south. I don't think we are any more patriotic than any other region but perhaps there is less reticence about displaying that here than there is in other areas.

probably because after 9/11 and iraq, all the neo-cons inadvertently changed the popular view of an american waving the flag from being american to being ignorant white trash claiming to be patriotic... people probably don't want to be viewed as ignorant white trash, so they stash the flag.

<--- P&N is that way

?? it was an answer to the op's question...

what else should i have said? she asked a question... i responded with a valid answer.

No you responded with just an answer. Valid? Let's just say that's up for debate.

I guess my Jeep doesn't need a flag sticker. The logo is enough. Right?

Because the neocons have turned patriotism into a dirty thing...

I've flown an American flag 24/7 for about 20 years. I replace it at least annually. HOWEVER, since the Iraqi invasion, I only fly my flag on national holidays, and then, often either at half-staff to honor those who have lost their lives in this FUBAR'D Bush-war, or upside-down to show that I believe the country is in danger...or both...I've had a couple of neighbors get upset at me for it, but they get sent packing, often with less-than-kind words...
Memorial Day is a day when I fly it at half-staff to honor those who have fallen in ALL wars.
Independence Day (and Flag Day) it USUALLY gets flown at full-staff, in all it's glory.
Veteran's Day it gets flown at half-staff again in rememberance.

Hehe, I hope you're kidding.

The people who claim that being critical towards US policy is a "fad" make me want to puke. It's like they think critical thinking and intelligence are something of a passing sign of immaturity. Pathetic.
