Everyone was patriotic and loved America.

Especially when the Iraq war started everyone felt the need to show how patriotic they were and everyone bought new and bigger flags to fly.

I was, and still am against the war, but I still displayed my flag.

Then I really noticed the last couple of years that there arent nearly as many flags flying as there used to be.

Now with the nice weather and the Memorial Day weekend here I still dont see any flags.

I hope that changes this weekend.
i'm flying old glory.

probably because after 9/11 and iraq, all the neo-cons inadvertently changed the popular view of an american waving the flag from being american to being ignorant white trash claiming to be patriotic... people probably don't want to be viewed as ignorant white trash, so they stash the flag.

<--- P&N is that way

?? it was an answer to the op's question...

what else should i have said? she asked a question... i responded with a valid answer.

No you responded with just an answer. Valid? Let's just say that's up for debate.

He's hardly etching his opinion in stone if you had read the post. When discussing the reason American flags aren't being displayed as prominently in recent times his explanation is not absurd in the case of A LOT of people. Valid? No, it's not up for debate, it's a ligament theory.

I would only fly the English flag during the world cup or something. I have never flown the Union Jack. Why would I? It's not like people are going to forget where they are, see the flag, and think "oh yea, I'm in Britain!"...

Hehe, I hope you're kidding.

The people who claim that being critical towards US policy is a "fad" make me want to puke. It's like they think critical thinking and intelligence are something of a passing sign of immaturity. Pathetic.

Anti-Americanism is now the default position of many young Europeans - even those who have never really thought about it properly, and regardless of any serious and justified critisism of the US.

Uh.. you're blind if you don't realize many people act the way they do because it's "cool". There are many ignorant people in the US who believe anything they hear and don't have actual backing for what they say and do. This includes anti-Americanism and anti-Patriotism. It doesn't show a lack of critical thinking, intelligence, or maturity to support your country, your fellow citizens, and your home.

What, just like nationalism, just like religion? There are immature sheep in every group of people. That does not make the entire thing a fad, or cool.

I think people round here have seen too much footage of Americans standing in front of a flag and expounding their hatred of some foreign country or another - even freinds Britain, Australia, etc.

These people fall into the category of "ignorant people in the US who believe anything they hear and don't have actual backing for what they say and do". Judging an entire nation based on what you see on TV is itself ignorant. TV news is paid to get viewers. They are going to show you the extremes and the extremes only.

I am kidding (sort of). But the fact of the matter is, right after 9/11, people suddenly were like OMG I MUST BE PATRIOT OR I AM A TERRORIST! and now, people are just getting back into the old "throw the flag into the closet" mindset. Sure, the flags will come out for holidays, but it's just not the average American's mindset to constantly display their flag.

Plus, many people (myself included) don't really support any of the recent actions taken by the US government. Maybe once things start turning around (if they do) people will start freely expression their feelings once again.

I can speak only of places I have visited, but many young people round here certainly do consider anti-americanism the 'cool' thing.

On a side note, I recently had to give a speech to my English 2 class about US domestic policy and surveillance. Aside from the right wing fat smelly nutcase who was constantly jeering at me (until I called Bush the first emperor of the US and made him storm out), none of the people in my class had any idea some of the stuff I was talking about was going on. Americans are stupid, being herded collectively like sheep. They do what their neighbor does. They don't think for themselves.

edit: most Americans (98.793642781% or so )

Fair enough.

I know you guys are right when you say that there ARE people who hate the USA because it's different/rebellious and that makes it "cool".

I'm saying that there are people out there (and in here, even) that claim the entire thing is a fad, completely failing to realize there are people who blindly follow governments and religious institutions as well. It's not fair to lump them all into one immature category, regardless of if you agree with them or not.

exaggerated (!) patriotism paired with ignorance is the root of ALL evil and wars.

() ignorance/patritism...the fact that i see/hear so many americans scream and praise their own country as "the best" whilest totally ignorant about circumstances in other countries, neither being able to even pinpoint other countries on a map. Not ALL other countries are 3rd world

() sad, but TRUE: A majority (not all) of the "extreme patriotic" flag waving people are very right HICKS and REDNECKS with an IQ of about -10.

() patriotism is STILL dumb. I am still uncertain whether i am actually "american" now or german, i have the choice to reside here and there. Its irrelvant. German flagwavers are the same idiotic morons. Since the last worldcup they overdo it with that stupid flag-waving.

If you are born in a country...well being "proud" that you were born in a country is just stupid.

IMHO its much cooler to be "multi cultural", global and accept/toelrate and understand other cultures INSTEAD of waving a flag and blindly spout out how "great" your own country is. You just look extremely ridiculous doing that, especially if it turns out you know nothing about other countries.

() At least here in EU there is a trend that now also young people get "drilled" to see EU as whole....and i am sure in some more years it becomes even more evident how dumb patriotism is....EU grows together and people start to care more about other countries, trying to understand neighboring cultures etc..etc.. kids going on exchange into other countries and vice-versa.

() if you limit yourself in blindly thinking that your country, state, county (lol) is the best...you just look stupid. I get a kick out of it travelling around (as far as is possible) with GF in states, me living here.....whatever. Its all just a few flight hours apart and borders are totally irrelevant.

TERRORISTS do NOT see that....they are the obvious negative examples of extreme "patritiosm" because they KILL out of their own ignorance ! They not only say that their (middleeastern) culture/religion is best, they also say that every OTHER culture has to be DESTROYED.

Too bad, the line between patriotism and fanatism, even terrorism is often a THIN one.

That is a view that seemes to be shared with most of the EU. Any display is considered some a Nationalistic display of discrimination/ignorance.

My cousins visited from the UK and they were surprised that so many people actually flew the flag here. Even during the WC in Germany I think the country surprised itself that so many people flew the German flag at the matches and surrounding events.
