How come mental math is so hard?

You're in a dungeon, chained to a wall. You see Dr. Pizza across the room also chained to the wall. An ominous voice begins speaking through an intercom:

"Education in America is crippled, and soon you will be as well if you can not meet my challenge. There is a bomb attached to each of your legs, and they are set to detonate in the next 3 minutes. You can deactivate the bomb by simply reciting every number between 0 and 1000 that is divisible by 7."

Dr. Pizza walks away 15 seconds later.

142 numbers in 3 min is doable but not much time to think. Just need to go through the 7 multiplication row. But yea 15 sec is not but maybe he just figured out how to undo the locks.

Friend told me his coworker can recite pi to 20+ digits. Witnessing that would leave me slack jawed!

Why, that is rote memorization. It is not really that hard. I bet he knows it to exactly 20 digits. He already knew the first 2 digits (3.14) probably broke the rest up into 3 digit periods and memorized them over the space of a few days.

That German calculator guy is kind of a curiosity. He mostly memorizes things like large powers. I don't think he can actually do complex math problems unless he's memorized it ahead of time.
