since 1x dvd is around 1.4 MB/sec, 16x is around 22MB/sec. how come when i use dvddecryptor and rip it to HD it never hits 22MB/sec?? the HD and dvd rom are both on separate channels, both using 80wire ata cable. both set at ultra DMA. it can't be my HD cuz it should average more than 22MB/sec.

16x might be it's max speed, which it will only reach near the end because the disk reads from the inside track to the outside.

but it never reaches 16x even at the last part of the ripping process. i rip the whole full dvd(single or dual layer, doesnt matter), but i never go above 8x even at the last minute.

Same with me, and I belive thats going to eliminate the processor being maxed out. So i dont know what it is. Dosnt bother me though as I can still get it ripped in less than 20 minutes.

The Read speed and ripping speed are 2 different things. This is the same whether ripping music to mp3 or whether it is a DVD or CDRom drive.

how do you rip music to mp3?? i think your confusing ripping and encoding.

ripping is just extracting from cd, to most likely HD (ie, rip it to my harddrive). then on your HD, you could encode it however you want. (ie, divx encoding)

Even skipping the intermediate step of ripping prior to encoding, the basic premise of what he said was correct. Just because a CD-ROM has a 52x read speed, that in no way assures you of a 52x rip speed. The lack of mention of the seperate encoding step doesn't change that fact. Similarly, just because a DVD-ROM drive is a 16x drive, it may not be able to rip at 16x speed.

Probably because most drives have speed limitations on ripping encrypted discs built into the firmware. Google your drive # and see if there is any hacked firmware out there. Chances are you'll never rip faster than 10x-12x anyway though, so it might not be worth the risk.

Lots of DVD drives are 'rip-capped' as per MPAA/DVD-Forum 'guidance'.

My old Toshiba was limited at 2x.

yeah, I've heard the same thing. I've heard that many DVD drives, particularly the newer ones, are capped at 2x for ripping despite being labeled "16x" or whatever.

he speaks the truth.

all drives advertised are the read speeds and not ripping speeds.

read speeds is the laser reading the data on the media. has nothing to do with the hard drive. It has no dependencies.

rip speeds is extracting the data. Rip speeeds depends mainly on ide drivers and mayb ASPI (that's debatable). The ripping has to read the media and then write the information to the hdd. So, the drive and hdd have to work with each other. Even then optical drives are still limited by ATA33 .. not very fast if you ask me.
