How cool would it be to own a netbook 50 years from the future?

Having a mini supercomputer in your back pocket would be so convenient.

You could play Crysis with all settings maxxed, and the netbook would handle it as if it were Solitaire!

Being able to render videos and such in seconds!

When ya need a bigger monitor, just use the built in projector and face it toward a wall. Or use the HDMI out with your current monitor.

If it's from 50 years in the future I would hope it didn't need a cable to connect to a display device. It should be able to project a holographic image mid air.

50 years in the future... I hope I still have a carbon footprint.

Well, when you compare the compatibility of software from computers 25 years ago to what we have now... you probably won't be able to run Crysis on your future computer without some sort of emulator written for that machine. Hope you remembered to bring along a x86-64 emulator for your super future computer

Windows 14 won't run any software from this primitive era

It will use subspace 8G for its broadband connection so you won't be able to link to the hypernet

You have no cerebral implant to control it, so it will just sit there waiting for your thought-pulses

Ha ha, Dave is right. Translocate a modern ASUS eee PC to 1960. How useful is it?

There's no Intarweb, not even ArpaNet. Certainly no 802.11 wireless! You can type on the thing, but you can't email the docs anywhere, transfer them by Flash drive to your local vacuum tube, punch-card mainframe, and you can't even print them! No consumer printers, no USB cables, etc etc.

And same goes the other way. Punch-card programs aren't terribly useful for your netbook, though I suppose you could manually translate them into code you could then type into your machine-from-the future. But if the netbook didn't come preloaded with applications and files, there'd be nothing to do with it. No Facebook, no web browsers, no H.264 pr0n...

Sometimes I have fantasies of travelling to my childhood a couple of decades ago with a computer from AD 2010. But I realise I'd have to bring at least a garage-full of kit with me. Without any modern WWW and everything out there in the Cloud, any important files would have to be locally saved (pr0n again, software code, news [future share prices!], audiovideo media). So I'd probably be bringing a trailer-full of high-capacity hard drives with me. Also several spare IPS monitors / plasma TVs to display my Futuretech's video signal. Lots of USB and video cables... (will lose, step on them)

I do too, but not as an adult but back to being a kid again, but with the knowledge I have now. Oh, the things I would do differently... starting with actually enjoying being a kid again with few responsibilities and my whole life ahead of me...

Say what you want about a netbook from the future, it will still come with bloatware.

I got news for you... Your next PC 3 to 5 years from now is going to be your phone.

Look at the current crop of DROIDs, etc. My HTC has an HDMI output... allow me to also drive a BlueTooth or usb keyboard and mouse with it and I can pretty much do most of what I do with a PC on the internet TODAY....

Sure... today's phones can't handle complex spreadsheets, but think about 5 years from now... The ability for your company to issue you a phone, with only one data plan, that will allow you to do most everything you need to be doing for productivity...and be a hell of a lot cheaper than a laptop, laptop wifi/3g plan/fees, + traditional phone plan/blackberry data plan... etc...

No... You won't be playing 3d games on them, nor will an engineer be designing bridges, so there will be a need for traditional PC's...But by and far most users will be able to do 100% of their daily computer use on their phones when docked for proper sized input devices and display.

Think about it... No more heavy laptop bag over your shoulder. No more large power brick...

Of course Microsoft will never release mobile office for Droid or iOS, so Windows Phone OS will really need to take off... <insert jokes here>

In 50 years a Netbook will be 40+ years old and likely buried in a Garbage Dump. Wouldn't be Cool at all.

Phones will never be that useful for productivity work. Its not a processing power problem, its a size of the device problem. I could possibly see this for iPad like devices 10-30 years into the future, but not on phone sized devices.

Try typing a 5 page document on a phone, Its not laggy or unresponsive, it just sucks ass.

I am still surprised at how computers today have 32 times more transistors than a computer built 10 years ago...assuming the same die size.

Comparing a computer built today to one built 20 years ago......we are talking 1024 times more transistors (assuming the same die size).

Anyone want to extrapolate out to 50 years?

This. I wouldn't want to carry around anything larger than current smart phones in my pocket, but the form factor is limited to screen sizes in the low 4" range. A screen that size will never satisfy me. Wait, that didn't sound right. :$ :hmm: :awe:

That is why phones will come with projected keyboards and screens. Everyone knows that...:sneaky:.

No. It'll be quite plausible that your main computing device will be your phone AND it will contain a 4" display that will unroll into a larger display as you need it. Maybe it won't be a display that can be rolled and unrolled, maybe it'll be a superthin display that can be unfolded in segments if you need a larger display. I have full confidence that someone somewhere will enable this in the future. That's assuming we don't have projected holographic displays instead which can project a display as large or as small as we need.

Then you didn't read what I wrote.... Docking.

There are already Marriotts and Hyatts that I can check into and plug my laptop video out into the large screen TV in the room. Hotel rooms of the future might come with a universal work desk that provides keyboard and mouse + screen... all you provide is the phone and cable. Really people.

it depends on how much energy is required to transport the netbook through time.

it also depends on how efficient the process is.

chances are, it would take considerable energy, and the process would not be 100% efficient - so there's a good chance the netbook would get pretty hot during the transfer.

might need a special heat sink ?
