How did Metallica just suddenly loose their ability to make such amazing music?

even with their haircut years they made some good music....it was just commercial and they didn't relate to the pure metal fanbase they came from.....but the album "St. Anger" did not have one decent song on it......it sucked......they are rich rock stars now....in and out of rehab.....they don't put their soul into the music they write anymore........

I don't know, but it happened to Dream Theater too. I can't think of one song off of their last two albums (Which takes us back to the year 2000) that I really like.

But I also consider other contributions. They got older. The whole musical scene changes and grows. Bob Rock. Growing popularity with mainstream success.

 Perfectly written. You couldn't have said it any better. If every album sounded like MoP we would gripe that they have no musical diversity. If their sound doesn't float your boat, then move on. There isn't a band out there that has 10+ years in the industry that hasn't had some music that their fans determined to be subpar.

Plus, when you make as much money as they have, you're going to "sell out." It's inevitable.

Almost all bands sell out or change their sound to some degree. Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Judas Priest, and many other bands did it as well. However, their new material still manages to beat the hell out of St. Anger.

I'm sorry, the new Maiden album simply rocks, it's probably one of their best works.

With Metallica it's all about money. Watch the movie "Some kind of Monster", which should be called "please give me a hug Lars." Hetfield has one dialog where he gives the new bassest 1 million dollars for "inspiration", they just don't get it. They'd rather have a shrink follow them around and tell them about their feelings than f*ckin harden up and write some good music. They're old, they're sensitive, they're rich... nothing metal can come from that BS.

If they wanted to sell out, they would keep making the same safe music that everyone liked and bought. I would say that all the money they made allowed them to expand their artistic sides and make music, like St Anger, that don't necessarily appeal to the masses.

Actually, Metallica did not condone the old Napster--they were against piracy and violation of copyright. Really a non-issue now with the success of legitimate online music like iTunes and the new Napster.

I love their old sonds and their new songs (some of them anyway) mostly because I didn't get into Metallica until they had everything. But, their old songs are a lot more complex and very well written, so I can easily see why people think they sold out.

I didn't have any problem with them before St. Anger. All bands evolve to a certain degree. Many people can't get used to the fact that yes, they did go to a shorter-play and more "mainstream" rock, SFW? They still played dang well. I still like a lot even from S&M and the newer albums ( I still love No Leaf Clover). Those who say they sucked after Cliff just refuse to acknowledge that people change over time.

However, then they just become another thrash band.

I mean, seriously, the first time I heard St. Anger I thought it was a garage band out of Miami (thats where I heard it first and didn't hear them announce the name). They just sucked.

No more good solos, no more good cohesion, just thrashing, yelling, and sucktastical idiocy.

How does that explain AJFA, TBA, or (R)L?

AJFA came out when Napster was around?

People get older while CD's don't. When they did most of their earlier stuff they were young and full of energy with no real concerns in the world.

They lost Cliff and realized that they aren't immortal.

They got married and had kids.

Families now start taking precedent over the band.

Bodies are no longer able to do 40 hour marathon recording sessions.

The music scene changed.

The music industry changed.

Come back in ten years and tell me that you have the same preferences, priorities and outlook on life that you do right now.

I wasn't trying to bash AMOLAD. Lord of Light and The Legacy are easily two of the best songs they've ever written. My comment was directed at the AC/DC sound in NPFTD/FOTD, the emo sound TXF had, and the complete lack of enjoyable music in VXI. My point is that the three bands I mentioned had low points and then picked themselves up again. Metallica just keeps sinking deeper.

My point is that Napster has nothing to do with the suckiness of AJFA.

The money wasn't for "inspiration", it was so that he felt as real and integral part of the band...something that Jason never did.

How can you beat lyrics like that?

With lyrics like these.

You walk through the subway, his eyes burn a hole in your back,
A footstep behind you, he lunges prepared for attack.
Scream for mercy, he laughs as he's watching you bleed,
Killer behind you, his blood lust defies all his needs.

My innocent victims are slaughtered with wrath and despise,
The mocking religion of hatred that burns in the night.
I have no one, I'm bound to destroy all this greed,
A voice inside me compelling to satisfy me.

Exactly. And it didn't happebn "suddenly".

Justice was still pretty good (would have been their best album if Cliff was still around IMHO).

Black was ok.

Then went downhill faster and faster with each album..........

AJFA had potential, but the lack of bass, generic songs like The Frayed Ends of Insanity, and the weak drum sound from Lars really hold it down.

I don't know wtf those lyrics are supposed to mean, but they look lame.

Spiral path leads through the maze,
Down into the fiery underworld below.
Fire-breathing lead the way,
Lucifer was just an angel led astray.

People change.

It's as simple as that.

Do you really expect them to be the same at 40 as they were at 20?
