Exactly. And it didn't happebn "suddenly".

Justice was still pretty good (would have been their best album if Cliff was still around IMHO).

Black was ok.

Then went downhill faster and faster with each album..........

AJFA had potential, but the lack of bass, generic songs like The Frayed Ends of Insanity, and the weak drum sound from Lars really hold it down.

I don't know wtf those lyrics are supposed to mean, but they look lame.

Spiral path leads through the maze,
Down into the fiery underworld below.
Fire-breathing lead the way,
Lucifer was just an angel led astray.

Cliff said those lyrics at the end of To Live is to Die

Aside from Blackened, the three you mentioned are easily the three best on the album... Eye of the Beholder is good as well. Blackened is very overrated IMO. It had potential but the *tap* *tap* *tap* from Lars is bad enough to ruin the whole thing.

The Frayed Ends of Sanity is "generic"? Have you even actually listened to it? LOL

It's an amazing song, nowhere near generic.

Dyer's Eve is also a good song.

What about "One"? All of AJFA is awesome.

I *love* MOP, but I would call Disposable Heroes more generic than anything on AJFA.

Anyway, arguing about music is silly. Everyone has different tastes.

Lars has some decent kick drums in AJFA too. Maybe you need some better speakers.

There's definitely more than a *tap* *tap* *tap*.

It's just the same old raw riffage that they've been doing since KEA... dragged out to over seven minutes. Dyer's Eve and One are both excellent, but they alone aren't enough for the album. I agree that Disposable Heroes is pretty generic as well. It's pretty much a six minute song, but they repeated the verses and outro too many times as to make it sound epic like the rest of the album.

age, most musicians lose their creative spark after a while, the ability to make truely ground breaking stuff, not just adequate filler. you see it with comeback albums from all the old artists, they always suck.

Just Metallica? Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette, Eminem, AC/DC, Oasis etc. (Even Led 'Infallible' Zeppelin)

Regardless of genre or style, all artists go under some kind of a transformation which pisses of their original, hardcore fan base. St. Anger was a disaster but I guess if you really love an artist, you go into denial and wonder what the hell is going wrong while secretly telling yourself it ain't that bad (I did the same with Pearl Jam's Binaural and to some extent, Riot Act). It happens to everyone: film-makers, video game developers, musicians, et al.

I guess it's a little unfair to expect an artist to make the same record for over 25 years. You do that, you piss off another group of fans that now starts to think they are getting boring, uninspired and repetitive. Metallica, like all major artists with record-breaking-sales, also has extreme levels of expectations - from those who want the same old grandiose, as well as those expecting a new, path breaking sound.

I don't expect another MoP, RtL, or even AJFA from Metallica. I still think they can put out some quality stuff though. I think people will be surprised by their next album.

I think so too. I'm hoping that St. Anger was sort of reverting back to a pre-refined state of Metallica. In trying to get back to their roots, the whole thing just came off being too rough around the "right" edges. But I think they have a better idea of what they're doing now, I think James has settled down a lot, I think they have the right idea of what they did wrong, I know they're looking at AJFA for inspiration on where to go. I'm really hoping their next album will be a relative grand slam.

But in my eyes, if their next album is another flop, I'll consider them a lost cause. I'll probably still buy it, but they'll be bumped off my list of bands to keep an eye on.
