1993: My friend's cousin started doing tech support for Prodigy. She got 5 free accounts to give family members....so I had a friend down the street with Prodigy. He ended up getting AOL too since it was a faster connection (Prodigy was 2400 baud at the time and got upgraded to 9600 eventually). I picked up Compuserv in 1994 and used it until a local ISP came in with a faster connection...of course that was short lived becuase they had more than a 1/25 ratio of customers to modems....which was the average.

Same here. My uni was one of the first in the nation to wire the dorms for high speed Internet (1.5mbit shared, I think). Before that I was on several BBSes that had mail gateways set up, and I remember thinking "Who needs 'electronic mail'? Just use FidoNet!"

I spent a lot of spare time getting an old Fortran IV version of that workable on a VAX 11/785. My first access was when I worked at NRL through usenet groups on one of the VAX front ends to the Cray we worked with.

Prodigy(1994) -> AOL(1997) -> Local dialup(1999) -> Cable (2000)

Oh yeah, does anyone remember the "Internet Yellow Pages"? That thing was ridiculous.

It was a pretty good game. Kind of a cross between Chess, Battleship and, D & D. It even had NPC dialogue if I remember.

Natural progression.
Started by using BBS in 1986, then online services like Genie, then dial up with dos and playing games using kali for dos, then on to windows.

I was always excited about communicating via computer.
I soldered together a 25pin serial cable with a 300 baud modem because the local radio shack didn't stock serial cables at the time.

I was sat in front of it, literally.

I think it was 4th grade and my teacher had probably just learned about it. The school had a Netscape account. I think they knew about as much as I did, sat me down, and said play with this.

I found it lying unconscious behind a 7-11 and raped it mercilessly. 9 months later, 4-chan was born. Coincidence?

Oh back around 1994 or so my college computer lab got hooked to the Net.
I started poking around and found it somewhat entertaining. Pics of models printed out on the labs B&W laser, yay.
I remember writing down URLs on paper.

I was going onto local BBS's around the mid 90's. Got Netscape dialup around.... 96, 96 or 98??? can't remember. Got DSL or cable some time around 2000... don't think I've left my house since then.
