I was looking for naked pictures of Japanese chicks. That was a good day.

I love how geeky ATOT can be. Someone asks a question that is incredibly easy to interpret as "dirty," and it takes a woman to drop the first innuendo. And then, after mosh opens up her snatch for discussion (try to take that the wrong way, I dare you), people get right back into discussing their 2400 baud modems and the glory days of AOL. That's a level of geekiness that few can aspire to (honestly, who would want to?).

That said, the earliest memories I have of the internet are from 94ish. We had an old SupraFAX 14,400 baud modem. I remember browsing for porn (ahh, middle school), and it taking upwards of two minutes to load a single image. You had to pray that you had clicked on something that was actually of interest to you (I think I see a nipple... wait... wait... wait, that's a dude... shit, abort!). We were on an old Mac that couldn't play Doom or Hexen... but it ran A-10 Attack like a champ (that game was the shit). We ran free AOL for about a year and a half; just kept uninstalling and reinstalling the demo discs (I have no idea why this worked). My parents were always behind the curve on technology; we ran that 14.4 modem well into the heyday of the 56k, and graduated to 56k while most people were jumping to DSL and cable.

Ahhhh, the good old days, where you could stumble upon a random porn site, click at random, and not worry about viruses, spyware or adware (the latter two hadn't even been invented).

I used text-based Gopher terminals at my public library when I was in junior high. Eventually I moved on to Compuserve over my families' brand-new super-fast 14400 baud modem. That was the shit, because it had graphics and I could use a mouse.

We had one of the first cable modem roll-outs in the USA, back in 1998. Unlimited 10 Mb/s for $40/month. There wasn't much out there worth downloading at that point, though.

It all started with AOL back in 1996. My friend gave me access to an account I later found out to have been created from a fake credit card number generated from a prefix. To this day I still don't know how AOL allowed fake card numbers to create an account, isn't there some kind of validation process?

It's how most of carding worked back then. Things weren't ran 'live'. Even now there are templates that can generate valid card numbers...this is why you need more than just a number to charge to the card.

Back in the day tons of people made a business of carding stuff overnight to vacant houses. By the time the charges were ran they already disappeared with the items.

Sounds like the 90's version of the Nigerian scam.

My (then) best friend had a rig consisting of:
66MHz 486 processor
8MB EDO RAM
500MB HDD
Creative Sound Blaster 16 ISA
Creative X2 CD-ROM
and.. an external 14,400 baud modem connected via serial port (COM). I remember I was literally stunned when he showed me he could communicate with foreigners from all across the planet, AKA "chat"; This was around 1997. I'd have to wait until 1999 to have my computer connected to the the world wide web though.

1996, I just finished elementary school. My mom finally replaced the old 33MHz 386 with a cryrix PR200 machine with 33.6kbps modem.

Ah i still remember the old days surfing warez with 20 popups, and then fapping to the pr0n ads.
