We took a trip down to our adopted home town of Mobile, AL where we'd previously gone to college during our freshman year (this was summer between our junior/senior year of college at a different school.) We spent most of that day messing around town, going to the beach, etc. The on the way back to our hotel that afternoon I asked her if she wanted to drop by the old park we used to go to near campus where used to go several times a week to relax, lay out and feed the ducks by the pond. She said sure. I picked up some bread to feed the ducks with and then almost killed us racing to get to the park ahead of an approaching thunderstorm (she wondered why I was in such a rush.) The ducks at this park can sometimes be rather aggressive since they're used to being fed by the public so we got up on a picnic table to throw the bread down to them. She was standing on top of the table and I stepped down to the bench part for a second (so while I wasn't technically on my knees or anything the effect was the same.) She was reaching down into my hand to grab some more bread when I opened it to show her the ring and ask her to marry me. Obviously she loved it and it was a very nice moment. The coolest thing was that the ducks who were usually VERY loud were DEAD silent during that moment while I had stepped down. It helped kind of freeze it in time and make the moment seem that much nicer. The storm dissipated, the sun came out. Everything worked out great. It might be a little cheesy, but I'm glad it worked out so well.

same here...though, I did do a semi "Sweet Home Alabama" thing (ie-Choose any ring at Tiffany & Co.)... The day before the wedding, I still had not got my fiance her real diamond engagement ring (She had a cheap, three diamond engagement ring). So, we were in Honolulu/Waikiki, and I had my Dad take us to one of his friends custon Jewelry place (Tropical Creation)...I had my Dad's friend take out all the plumeria set rings they had, and had her choose the one, then we choose a diamond to set, and matching wedding bands...

It was cool...

Here is how I popped the question:

I did on my wife's birthday. I gave a set of gifts.

First was a small jewelry box.
Second was a ring holder.

Funny thing is, she still hadn't gotten the hint yet.

So finally, I get down on one knee and pull out the box. It was a lighted box. It has a built-in light that shines right on the diamond and makes it sparkle. Her eyes got REALLY big at that point. Then I asked her to marry me. The shocked and surprised look on her face was priceless.

She couldn't breathe for about 30 seconds, but she finally gasped out a yes. Viola! I was engaged.

Funny thing is, she spent that next 3 hours calls all her friends and family. "I'm getting married!" LOL!

She was embarrassed. Actually she was a little nuts, IMO. I have no idea why he wanted to marry her.

She eventually said yes, but they got divorced less than a year after they got married. They just were just too different, really.

He remarried about a year ago, only he was not as extravegant about popping the question.

I was going to teach one morning, and it had just dawned on me that she was THE ONE! (I'm a guy, so yes, it took me a while to figure that out.), She was watching the morning news, so I went over, turned off the TV and got down on one knee and propsed. She didn't think I was serious at first, but then she realized I was and accepted. Three weeks later we married. (Exactly 364 days after our first date, why 364? because it was a Friday and the courthouse is closed on weekends, that and I had to get back to teach on Monday) When we got back from the honeymoon (just a weekend in Atlantic City), her engagement ring and our wedding bands were ready. That, my friends, was 6.5 years, 2 kids, and 2 countries ago. We've been through a lot and we're still happily married.
